Assembly Procedure

1. Use a suitable lifting device to position connecting rod (9) onto a suitable press. Refer to Table 2 for the approximate weight of connecting rod (9) .

2. Use Tooling (B) and a suitable press to install bushing (8) only if needed. Install bushing (8) after freezing the bushing in a freezer or liquid nitrogen.

3. Position thrust bearing (7) in crosshead (4) . Install thrust bearing retainers. If the retainers have a raised edge, face the raised surface away from the thrust bearing. Apply Tooling (C) to the threads of bolts (6) . Install bolts (6) . Tighten bolts (6) to a torque of 169 N·m (125 lb ft).

4. Apply Tooling (D) to the knuckle portion of connecting rod (9) . Use Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to install crosshead (4) on connecting rod (9) . Refer to Table 3 for the approximate weight of crosshead (4) .

Note: Pin (5) has a recessed hole for set screw (3) to hold pin (5) in place. Install pin (5) with the recessed hole pointed straight up.

5. Apply Tooling (C) to the treads of set screw (3) . Install set screw (3) into crosshead (4) .

6. Use a suitable lifting device to position pony rod (2) . Refer to Table 4 for the approximate weight of pony rod (2) .

7. Position pony rod (2) on crosshead (4) . Apply Tooling (C) to the treads of bolts (1) . Install bolts (1) . Tighten bolts (1) to a torque of 305 N·m (225 lb ft).

End By: Install the crosshead.
