Rear Axle Bolted Joint Modified On Certain 994H Wheel Loaders {3013, 3268, 3278}

Wheel Loader: 994H (S/N: DWC1-UP)

Description Of Change: The rear axle bolted joint was modified on certain 994H Wheel Loaders. The rear axle joint threads required longer bolts and spacers to achieve the proper bolted joint.

Adaptable To: The machines listed below are affected by this modification.

There is a spacer that will need to be fabricated before beginning the rework procedure. The spacer is made from ASTM A572 Grade 50 steel.

Clean all rear axle threaded holes with a wire brush.
Inspect the threaded holes at all 24 locations where the rear axle mounts to the rear frame. Refer to Illustration 2

Investigate for under-formed threads using a thread gauge. Refer to Illustration 3.

If the under-formed threads are found, use a 25.4 mm (1 inch) diameter grinder to eliminate the non-conforming threads. Refer to Illustration 4.

Note: The non-conforming threads (D) could be as much as 10 mm (0.39 inch) to 19 mm (0.75 inch) deep . Refer to Illustration 5.
Repeat Step 4 for all under- formed threaded holes found to be non-conforming.
Position the trunnion into the mounting location.

(K) Rear trunnion casting
Place 3S-6162 Hard Washer (H) and the fabricated spacer (G) onto 265-9721 Bolt (J) and insert into the rear trunnion casting (K). Refer to Illustrations 6, 7 and 8.

(L) Front trunnion block
Place 3S-6162 Hard Washer (H) and the fabricated spacer (G) onto 265-9721 Bolt (J) and insert into the front trunnion block (L). Refer to Illustration9.
Tighten all bolts to a specified torque of 1600 ± 200 N·m (1180 ± 148 lb ft), then turn the bolts an additional 120 degrees.
