Start By:

  1. Remove the hammer from the housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Hydraulic Hammer - Remove".

  2. Remove the accumulator. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Hydraulic Accumulator - Remove".

Note: Inspect the following items for cracks: tie rods, tie rod nuts and lock plates. Replace the cracked components.

  3. Refer to Illustration 4 for the sequence of heating the tie rods and removing the tie rods.

  4. Heat the exposed center portions of the tie rods with a propane flame or equivalent to 275° ± 25°C (527° ± 45°F). Perform this process to loosen the tie rod. Direct the flame away from the cylinder of the hammer. Thin steel sheets can be placed behind the tie rods to assist in deflecting the flame from the cylinder. Do not heat tie rods in one spot. Do not heat tie rods to a temperature that is greater than 300 °C (572 °F). Use Tooling (A) to determine the temperature of the tie rods.

    NOTICE

The tie rods will remain hot.

  5. Use Tooling (C) and a suitable lifting device to remove tie rod (3). Refer to Table 2 for the approximate weights of the tie rods. Repeat Step 3 through Step 5 for the remaining tie rods.

    Table 2
    Sales Model  Tie Rod (3)
    Approximate Weight
    H110E S  8 kg (18 lb)
    H115E S  9 kg (20 lb)
    H120E S  13 kg (29 lb)
    H130E S  15 kg (34 lb)
    H140E  24 kg (53 lb)
    H160E  29 kg (64 lb)
    H180E  41 kg (90 lb)

  6. Use Tooling (B) and a suitable lifting device to remove control valve (6). Refer to Table 3 for the approximate weights of the control valves.

    Table 3
    Sales Model  Control Valve (6)
    Approximate Weight
    H110E S  89 kg (195 lb)
    H115E S  89 kg (195 lb)
    H120E S  125 kg (275 lb)
    H130E S  125 kg (276 lb)
    H140E  165 kg (364 lb)
    H160E  219 kg (483 lb)
    H180E  229 kg (505 lb)

Note: The tie rod and tie rod nuts are matched pairs. Each part is numbered.

Note: Replace all broken tie rods and the nuts. Replace the tie rods and the nuts that are opposite of a broken tie rod. The opposite tie rod may have received excessive stress due to the broken tie rod.

Note: Make an upward arrow on each of the tie rod nuts for assembly purposes.

  7. Remove tie rod nuts (7).

  8. Clean the tie rods and the tie rod nuts. Inspect the tie rods and the tie rod nuts. Remove any fretting or galling on the contact surface of the nuts with an emery cloth or with sanding equipment.

  9. Use inspecting equipment to detect cracks on the tie rods or on the tie rod nuts.
