Overview of MCS A&P Network

Illustration 1 shows the typical layout of the MCS alarm and protection system. The following units are available in MCS alarm and protection system:
- MCS Controller (DCU 410)
- Shut down unit (SDU 410)
- Remote input/output module (RIO 410)
- Power analyzer module (RIO 425)
- Remote equipment interface (RP 410)
MCS Controller (DCU 410) - The MCS controls and monitors the engine. One panel is required for each engine. The MCS controller engine control unit utilizes a color screen and buttons for user interaction.
Shutdown Unit (SDU 410) - The SDU is the safety unit, which is required in class installation. The unit is completely self contained and is separate from the MCS controller. However, the MCS controller communicates with the SDU via the RS-485 communication link.
Remote Input/Output (RIO 410) - The RIO is an expansion I/O unit, which allows a maximum of four RIO units to be connected to one MCS controller. The MCS controller communicates with the RIO over an RS-485 link.
Power analyzer module (PAM) generator interface unit (RIO 425) - The PAM generator interface unit is linked to the MCS controller. The MCS controller detects the generator interface unit automatically. A new page is made available on the MCS controller, and on the remote panel, that displays the following generator parameters: phase voltages, phase currents, frequency, power and total harmonic distortion (THD).
Remote Equipment Interface (RP 410) - The REI can monitor and control a maximum of eight MCS controllers that are in the network. Several REI units can monitor the same engine, or one REI can monitor separate engines. The REI communicates with the MCS controller via Ethernet. Each REI can also monitor up to four cameras.

Precautions Regarding Classed Systems
In a classed and type approved installation, please adhere to the following guidelines.
The SDU safety unit must have a minimum of one engine speed sensor connected to the SDU.
Note: All of the modules are certified by major classification societies.
