Introduction
A machine retrofit is the adaptation of newer technology or content to older models of equipment. When a prime mover is retrofitted, the machine will contain parts that are not in the parts book. This compromises the service support for this equipment.
Documenting changes to a machine configuration is an advantage to Caterpillar and the dealer technicians that are sent to repair a machine. By identifying that the machine has been reconfigured, the technician will have a better opportunity to have the correct parts, tooling, and service information. Identifying that the machine has been reconfigured will also allow Caterpillar to include the retrofitted serial numbers in applicable Service Letters.
Table 1 can be filled in by a customer or Service Technician and entered into the system. Table 1 can be used as a template to record machine information while at the job site. The information can then be entered into the system when database access is available.

(1) | Only applies if a component is replaced by a retrofit component. If the product is an engine, and retrofit is a kit for upgrading the engine, disregard the "Removed Component" information. |
(2) | Record the highest level retrofit kit, arrangement, or group part number. |
(3) | Most retrofits will not have a serial number. Exceptions include emissions repower engines and diesel particulate filters. |
There are two separate instructions for retrofit registering. For instructions on registering a serialized component, refer to "Registering a Serialized Component". For instructions on registering a non-serialized component, refer to "Registering a Non-Serialized Component".
The following list contains some examples of Serialized Components:
- Engines
- Transmissions
- Diesel Particulate Filters (DFP's)
- Blades
- Rippers
The following list contains some examples of Non-Serialized Components:
- Emissions Upgrade Groups (EUG's)
- Stairways
- Handrails
- Lights
- Cutting Edges
- Tires
Registering a Serialized Component
For instructions on registering a serialized component such as an engine, transmission, blade, or seat assembly, refer to "Instructions to Register a Serialized Component"
For instructions on registering a diesel particulate filter (DPF) or multiple serialized components, refer to "Instructions to Register a Serialized Component in Product Configuration"
Instructions to Register a Serialized Component
Registering a serialized component such as an engine and/or a transmission retrofit must occur in the following two places within SIMSi:
- Service Reporting
- Product Information

- Enter information for the dealership and machine in "Service Report Common Info" section.
- Enter information in the "Part Causing Failure" section.
- Enter the major component part number within the machine retrofit as the "Part Causing Failure".
For example, enter the engine arrangement part number if installing an emission repower engine.
- Select "Cat" or "Non-Cat".
- Enter the major component part number within the machine retrofit as the "Part Causing Failure".
- Enter the quantity in the "Qty" field.
- Enter the correct problem description code in the "Desc Cd" section.
Type in or select the Binoculars to find the code for "Desc Cd". If a part is replaced, the code should be "SO" for removed. "SI" would be used for a second entry to show the installed component. "97" can be used for Emissions when reporting a failure.
Note: All retrofits will use "SI" and include the information on the component installed. If the retrofit is a change in design and is replacing the earlier design, the "SO" will also be used for the removed component.
Note: Click on the binoculars if you are not sure of your problem description code.
- In the "Group Number" field, enter the highest level retrofit part number.
- For machines that only require an installation, check the box for "Non-failure service".
- In the "Comments" field, enter the replaced component serial numbers.
Note: When a serialized component is removed, the serial number should be entered into the "Comments" section for reference in the future. The serialized component should be entered as an additional line. Use the Components "SMCS" code for the original "Group Number".
- When installing a repower engine Down Load a Product Status Report from the new engine. Attach the Product Status Report to the SIMS entry for future reference.
- After all the information has been entered, click "Add Record" at the bottom of the screen.
