The following actions may be initiated by the ECM. These actions are dependent on the severity of the condition.
- Illumination of a warning lamp or warning alarm
- Engine derate
- Engine shutdown
Three possible responses may be available for each parameter. Some of the responses are not available for some of the parameters. Refer to Table 1.

Use Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to perform the following activities for the monitoring system:
- Viewing parameters
- Parameter programming
- Set delay times
The default settings for the parameters are programmed at the factory. To accommodate unique applications and sites, some of the parameters may be reprogrammed with Cat ET. Use Cat ET to modify the monitoring system parameters.
Note: Some parameters do not require a password in order to be changed. Other parameters can be changed with customer passwords. Some of the parameters are protected by factory passwords. Some parameters cannot be changed. Some applications do not allow any changes to the programmable monitoring system. Parameters that are protected by factory passwords can only be changed by dealer personnel.
Viewing or Changing the Settings of the Monitoring System
Print a "Product Status Report" for your engine prior to continuing. The report will provide a reference to the current state of the engine.
Use the following procedure in order to view the parameter settings and/or change the parameter settings:
- Select the "Service/Monitoring System" screen on Cat ET.
Note: Ensure that you select the correct ECM for the parameters that are being changed before continuing.
- Highlight the desired parameter. Select the "Change" button in the lower left corner of the screen.
The "Change Monitor System" screen will appear.
- Change the "State" of the parameter.
- Set the "Trip Point" and the "Delay Time" according to the "Allowed Values" that are displayed in the lower half of the screen.
- Click the "OK" button.
If a password is required, the "Enter Passwords" screen will appear. Enter the correct passwords and then click the "OK" button. The new settings will be effective immediately.
Note: If a factory password is required, the "Enter Factory Passwords" screen will appear. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Factory Passwords".
Note: Factory passwords are only available to service technicians from an authorized Caterpillar Dealership. Customers of Caterpillar do not have access to the Caterpillar Feature Protection System (FPS).
Trip Points for the "Engine Monitoring System"
The ECM monitors the operating parameters of the engine. The ECM can generate a code for specific parameters that exceed an acceptable range. The acceptable range for each parameter is defined by the setpoints that are programmed into the ECM. Some of the setpoints for the parameters may be programmable by the technician. Access the engine monitoring system on Cat ET in order to view the current parameter settings.
Table 5 contains the codes that can be generated by the ECM. Most of the codes will coincide with a parameter that is monitored by the engine monitoring system. Some of the codes may be generated from a switched input or generated from calculated values that are based on multiple sensor inputs. These types of codes would not coincide with a parameter that is monitored by the engine monitoring system. Table 5 also contains the minimum and maximum ranges for the parameters and the default settings for each parameter.

Separate timers are used in the ECM for each response that is associated with a parameter. If a trip point is reached, the timer for that event is started.
