This Undercarriage Reconditioning Bulletin contains the necessary information to allow a dealer to establish a parts reusability program. Reuse and salvage information enables Caterpillar dealers and customers to benefit from cost reductions. Every effort has been made to provide the most current information that is known to Caterpillar. Continuing improvement and advancement of product design might have caused changes to your product which are not included in this publication. This Undercarriage Reconditioning Bulletin must be used with the latest technical information that is available from Caterpillar.

Summary

This Undercarriage Reconditioning Bulletin enables dealers to establish a benchmark for track, track roller, and track idler cycle times. Cycle times are a reflection of shop layout, training, correct tooling, and procedures. The cycle times contained in this bulletin were generated from shops within North American Commercial Division (NACD). This Undercarriage Reconditioning Bulletin reflects NACD average track, track roller, and track idler cycle times. Through proper shop layout, training, correct tooling, and procedures these times are achievable. If you are not meeting or exceeding these times, a closer look at your undercarriage service operations may be required.

Track

To achieve the Caterpillar recommended cycle times, the correct procedures, tooling, and technician trainingneeds areestablished. For correct procedures and tooling refer to Undercarriage Reconditioning Guide, SEBF8599. Technicians can be trained by enrolling in an Undercarriage Service Training Class offered in Peoria, Illinois. Positive Pin Retention (PPR), standard on some models and optional on others, helps mechanically lock the pin and the link together. The following cycle times include disassembly, cleaning, inspecting, and assembly for a complete pin and bushing turn with shoe removal and installation.

Positive Pin Retention (PPR)

Track Rollers

Track rollers can be divided into inverted and conventional sealing systems. Conventional rollers, which have bothDuo-Coneseals floating, require mechanical assistance to perform the disassembly and assembly. An inverted roller has a fixed seal in the retainer and a floating seal riding on the shaft and requires no mechanical assistance. Both inverted and conventional rollers are candidates for a roller exchange program and reuse program, to decrease cycle times. The cycle times include disassembly, cleaning, inspecting, and assembly for a roller. For proper disassembly and assembly methods refer to Undercarriage Reconditioning Guide, SEBF8599. Training on these procedures can be obtained by enrolling in an Undercarriage Service Training Class offered in Peoria, Illinois.

Track Idlers

Like track rollers, track idlers are a candidate for an exchange program and reuse program and have an inverted and conventional sealing system. Idler cycle times include disassembly, cleaning, inspecting, and assembly for an idler. Weld times include cleaning, pre-heating, and welding and do not include cool down for an idler. For proper idler disassembly and assembly methods refer to Undercarriage Reconditioning Guide, SEBF8599. Training on these procedures can be obtained by enrolling in an Undercarriage Service Training Class offered in Peoria, Illinois.
