Summary

This guideline can be used to find the part numbers of clutch plates. This guideline gives the specifications needed to the machine the reaction faces for Caterpillar power shift transmissions.

Reaction Faces - The surfaces of clutch housings, pistons, and other parts that are in contact with the outer disc assemblies of a clutch.

This guideline should be used with Reuse And Salvage Guideline, SEBF8257, "Procedure to Salvage the Slots for the Pin and Holes for the Reaction Dowel in Transmission Clutch Plates, Pistons, and Housings" for the correct location of speed and directional clutches in the different transmissions.

When used again in the same application, clutch parts that can be reused according to this guideline can be expected to give normal performance until the next overhaul.

NOTICE

Keep the clutch discs for individual clutches in their original sequence and with their respective clutch housings. The original clutch discs are made from different material for different clutches and must not be mixed.

Important Safety Information

On most new clutch housings, and new center and end plates, the contact face is part of the surface that is in contact with other housings. The reaction face is the surface that the clutch disc rotates against. Only the reaction face area can be machined on these parts. The piston face may be a reaction face, or it may have a clutch plate between itself and the clutch disc.

Identification of Transmission Clutch Plates

When the part number of a clutch plate is not available, or the worn plates from several transmissions have been mixed, use the following steps for the plate identification.

  1. Measure the outside diameter of the plates.

  2. With a known outside diameter, refer to Table 4 to check the other characteristics.

  3. For the correct identification of the material of the worn plate, lightly hit the plate against a solid steel body. The plates of steel will make a ringing noise. The plates of cast iron, ductile iron, or powdered metal, will make a dull noise. Do not regrind cast iron plates.

The wrong surface finish and grinding pattern on clutch plates, pistons, or other reaction faces can cause rapid wear of the disc assemblies. Refer to the surface finish of a new part in Table 4 for the correct finish. Reaction surfaces for sintered bronze and certain cellulose fiber discs must have a radial, crosshatch grinding pattern. These discs have surfaces of 0.63 micrometers (24.803 microinches) to 1.40 micrometers (55.118 microinches).

F37 reaction surfaces must have a circumferential grinding pattern with no crosshatch pattern. A crosshatch pattern is permitted on all piston and housing faces. A simple surface finish minimum roughness and grinding pattern test for the 25 micrometers (984.3 microinches) to 55 micrometers (2165.4 microinches) surfaces is performed by rubbing the edge of a copper coin around the circumference of the reaction face. The surface face has the correct pattern and minimum roughness if some of the copper is transferred to the face.

The surface finish requirements, for discs with cellulose fiber friction material vary with application and type of fiber. Refer to Table 4 for the finish given for the specific disc part number.

Inspection of Parts

Inspect the disc assemblies and plates to see if they can be used again. Refer to the References Table 2for Reuse and Salvage Guidelines that contain the reuse criteria dependent upon the friction material:

Inspect the pistons and other reaction faces to determine if they will need machining.

The above Illustration shows the detail of piston and/or center plate damage.
Cross sectional of view J-J shows piston damage or damage from the center plate.
(H) Area of wear
(13) Pit
(14) Bump of material

Some pistons and end faces that are used with nonmetallic friction material can develop small pits or tears on the face. The pits are in the shape of a tear. The pits are more distinct toward the outer diameter. The pits are visible with a magnifying glass. Refer to Illustration 5. Failure to replace the face and failure to resurface the face will cause rapid wear to the friction material. Use a circumferential grinder (100 grit) to resurface the disc. Grind the surface to an average surface roughness of 0.38 micrometers (15 microinches) to 0.88 micrometers (35 microinches). Do not remove more than 0.13 mm (0.005 inch) of material from the piston or end face.

Measurement of Stack Height

Stack height is the total thickness of the discs and plates used together in a specific clutch.

Measure the stack height of the clutch with an outside micrometer at three points that are 120 degrees apart. The measured stack height must be the same as, or more than, the “Use Again Minimum Stack Height”. Refer to Table 7 through Table 40 for the “Use Again Minimum Stack Height”. The measured stack height can be increased by selection of thicker, new, or reusable clutch plates. If any clutch parts have been machined, the measured stack height must be adjusted if the measured machine depth is more than zero. Refer to the"Measurement of Machined Depth".

An alternate method of determining stack height is performed by measuring the individual disc and plate thickness and adding the measurements.

Measurement of Machined Depth

Measured Machined Depth - the measured machined depth of the piston plus the measured machined depth of the housing, center plate, or end plate. For most housings, center plates, and end plates, the machined depth is the distance from contact face to the reaction face.

Measure the machined depth of the reaction faces at both sides of the clutch. The total measured machined depth must not be more than the “Maximum Machined Depth - Total Both Reaction Faces”. Refer to Table 7 through Table 40. Use a depth micrometer to measure the depth (refer to Illustration 6 and Illustration 7).

Note: Do not machine the contact surface because it would cause mis-location of the other components.

Illustration 8g01942096
The illustration shows the measurement of the piston thickness.

For most pistons, the machined depth can be found with the following procedure.

  1. Use an outside micrometer to measure the thickness of the piston.

  2. Subtract this dimension from the New Piston Thickness. Refer to Table 7 through Table 32.

Procedure to Machine the Reaction Faces

On clutch pistons, the complete surface can be machined, but normally, it is easier to machine only the reaction face. Do not machine more than the measurement shown in the column “Maximum Machined Depth - Total Both Reaction Faces” in Table 7 through Table 40.

An amount equal to the material taken from the housing contact face must also be removed from the gear clearance pocket.

For all parts except pistons, install the part in the lathe and use the contact face to put the part in alignment with the tool. For pistons, install the part in the lathe and use the surface opposite the reaction face to put the part in alignment with the tool. The tolerance for parallelism after the part is machined is given in the section “Measurement Procedure After Parts Are Machined” in this guideline.

Use a surface finish analyzer to measure the surface finish. A list of suppliers of surface finish analyzers can be found at the end of this guideline.

Caterpillar recommends that paint, or some other method, be used to mark a part to show that it has been machined. However, do not put the paint, or mark, on a surface that contacts another part.

Measurement Procedure after Machining

Measurement of Flatness of the New Surface Finish

Put a straight edge (Starrett No. 385 or similar) across the new machined surface. Use a feeler gauge to measure any gap between the new machined surface and the straight edge. For all parts except pistons, the measurement of the gap must be 0.10 mm (0.004 inch) or less. For pistons, the measurement of the gap must not be more than 0.05 mm (0.002 inch).

Measurement of Parallelism on All Parts Except Pistons

Use a depth micrometer to measure the distance between the contact surface and the new machined surface. The difference between the largest and smallest measurements of this distance must not be more than 0.10 mm (0.004 inch).

Measurement of Parallelism on Pistons

Install the piston in a lathe with a dial indicator against the surface opposite the reaction face. Turn the piston and make adjustments until the Total Indicator Reading (TIR) is zero. Put the indicator against the new machined surface. Turn the piston and check the dial indicator. The TIR must not be more than 0.05 mm (0.002 inch).

Adjustment to Stack Height

Note: The measured stack height can be adjusted (increased) by selection of thicker, new, or reusable discs, or by use of thicker, new, or remanufactured clutch plates.

An adjustment or increase to the measured stack height is necessary when:

  • The measured stack height is less than that given in the column “Use Again Minimum Stack Height”.

  • The reaction faces of the piston housing or center plates have been machined and the difference between the measured stack height and the “New Nominal Stack Height” plus the measured machine depth of both reaction faces are more than that shown in the column “Maximum Machined Depth - Total Both Reaction Faces”.

Follow the below steps to find out the amount of adjustment necessary:

  1. Add the difference (A) between the “New Nominal Stack Height” (B) and the measured stack height (C) to the measured machine depth (D).

  2. Compare the result (E) to the “Maximum Machined Depth - Total Both Reaction Faces” (F).

  3. If (F) is larger than (E), no adjustment is needed.

  4. If (F) is smaller than (E), the measured stack height must be adjusted (increased) by the difference between (F) and (E), or more. Refer to the"Example 1" and "Example 2".

Example 1

Refer the details of the clutch number 1 for the 518 Skidder in the Table 5. Since the maximum machine depth (F) is smaller than the compared result (E) the measured stack height must be increased by a minimum of the difference 0.05 mm (0.002 inch).

Example 2

Refer the details of the clutch number 2 for the D9L Track Type Tractor in the Table 5. Since the maximum machine depth (F) is larger than the compared result (E), no adjustment to the measured stack height is necessary.
