Guidelines for the Replacement of Fuel Injectors {1251, 1290}

Usage:

C15 C5E
Engine:
C15 (S/N: C5E1-UP; C5L1-UP)
C18 (S/N: EJG1-UP)
Generator Set:
C15 (S/N: C5H1-UP; X4R1-UP)
C18 (S/N: C6C1-UP; G4C1-UP; STM1-UP)
Marine Engine:
C18 (S/N: CKH1-UP)

Follow these guidelines before you replace an injector.

  • Before you replace an injector for an electrical short circuit, check for shorts in the injector wiring harness and in the connection between the harness and the injector.

  • Ensure that the routing of the injector harness is clear of moving components that are under the valve cover. This includes the injector's spring.

  • A failure of an injector cannot cause a failure of the rocker arm. However, failure of the rocker arm can cause a failure of the injector. Ensure that the injector has actually failed after failure of a rocker arm before the injector is replaced.

  • Replace the injector if fuel is leaking in the areas that are outlined in Special Instruction, REHS3007.

Note: A leaking injector can cause the engine oil to be diluted with fuel. When a Scheduled Oil Sampling is submitted, ensure that the oil grade is included. The Special Instruction, REHS3007 allows a lower oil viscosity than the Scheduled Oil Sampling labs. The Scheduled Oil Sampling report may indicate a problem with fuel dilution when the viscosity is below the normal limit but above the Special Instruction, REHS3007 limit.
