Troubleshooting Fuel Injector Failures on Some C13 and C15 On-highway Engines{1290, 1408}

Usage:

C15 B5R
Engine:
C13 (S/N: LEE1-UP)
C15 (S/N: SDP1-UP; B5R1-UP)

Introduction

The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.

Problem

It has been difficult to detect a faulty injector harness or a faulty injector on the engines that are listed above.

Solution

Until further notice, this procedure should be used when you are troubleshooting failures of the injector on the engines that are listed above. If a truck is in the shop for symptoms of failure of the injector and a cylinder cutout test shows a cylinder with a lower number than the rest, follow the procedure that is listed below.

  1. Determine the cylinder that is receiving insufficient fuel.

  1. Switch the low number cylinder injector with a normal number cylinder injector.

  1. If the low number cylinder injector follows to the new position, replace the injector. If the low number cylinder injector does not follow to the new position, replace the harness.

Refer to the example in Table 1. Switch the injectors for cylinders 3 and 4 in order to reduce the time for removal of the "VVA" housings.

Cylinder     Reading
1     23.55
2     24.02
3     23.30
4     20.02
5     22.5
6     23.2
