Location of the Vacuum Pump (1) Vacuum Pump |
The Vacuum Pump (1) is located in the middle of the cabinet for the flywheel. Refer to Illustration 1. The pump (1) is used to create a vacuum in the flywheel assembly so that friction from resistance (air) is reduced. The reduction in the resistance (air) allows the flywheels to spin without the added loss of energy.
The pump (1) draws air from the bottom of the flywheel housing.
Vacuum pressure in the flywheels should be low before you begin operation. When the vacuum goes above a minimum allowable pressure, a green notice will be recorded in the log file. The flywheel will shut down if the following conditions are met:
- The vacuum reaches the maximum allowable pressure.
- The vacuum remains at the maximum allowable pressure for 30 minutes.
The Vacuum Pump (1) contains oil that is used to help perform the following functions:
- Producing vacuum
- Lubricating the mechanism for the vacuum pump
Change the oil in the vacuum pump (1) annually. Oil is removed via the front drain through the middle shield.
NOTICE |
---|
The vacuum pump runs off 240 VAC from the output of the UPS. Do not change the voltage. Changing the voltage will damage the system and/or the vacuum pump. |
Refer to Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, RENR9988, "Internal Component Preremoval Steps (Flywheel Cabinet)" in order to shut down the system and gain access to internal components.
- Turn off power to the Vacuum Pump (1) by switching the power switch on the left side to the OFF position.
- Disconnect the Power Connector from the right side of the pump (1).
- Remove the tube (intake) that connects to the top of the pump. Remove the tube (exhaust vacuum) that connects to the top of the pump.
- Remove the two metal panels in the middle of the cabinet in order to gain access to the underside of the panel (pump mounting).
- Remove the four nuts that hold the frame for the pump base to the panel for the pump in the cabinet for the Flywheel.
- Verify that the power switch is set to "OFF". The power switch is located on the left side of the pump near the back.
- Attach the four nuts that hold the pump to the panel of the cabinet.
- Attach the two metal panels in the middle of the cabinet.
- Clean the O-ring for the connector (intake). Clean the O-ring for the connector(exhaust). Grease the O-ring for the connector (intake). Grease the O-ring for the connector (exhaust).
- Attach the vacuum tube (intake) to the top of the pump. Attach the vacuum tube (exhaust) to the top of the pump.
- Connect the power connector to the right side of the pump.
- Fill the new pump with Caterpillarrecommended pump oil. The oil capacity of the vacuum pump is
0.5 L (0.5 qt) . - Turn on power to the Vacuum Pump (1) by switching the power switch on the left side to the ON position.
