Modbus Network - Setup

The Modbus option requires a system I/O daughter card (SIOD). The SIOD is located in the system I/O PWA (SIO). The SIO is located in each multi-module system MMS, multi-module unit MMU flywheel cabinet or SMS flywheel cabinet. Also, the operating parameter must be enabled to utilize the Modbus configurations.

Multi-Module Systems (MMS) can be connected to the Modbus as one system or as individual flywheel Units, depending on the type of data desired.

To verify that the Modbus is enabled, view the configuration on the UIF on the front of the system cabinet or type "CTRL-N" from UPSView. If the system is not enabled, contact the technical communicator.

As shown in Illustration 1, each MMU system has data. the data is detailed. The data is specific to the particular MMU. The descriptions of MMU detailed data and system data are given in RENR9988, "Modbus Register Map".

System connections

System data is communicated between the MMUs via an internal serial communication channel and is available from any MMU. Detailed MMU data is only available from the specific MMU. For example, MMU2 detailed data is only available from MMU2. To obtain all of the available data from an MMS, a UPS requires that each MMU is connected to the Modbus.

The Modbus can be connected either by TCP (Ethernet) or RTU (RS485 serial). Two types of RS485 connections are supported, half duplex (2-wire) and full duplex (4-wire).

Note: Each MMU must have a unique ID when using Modbus RTU.

Half Duplex (2-wire) Setup

  1. Log into UPSView with a valid user name and password.

  2. In UPSView, set "Modbus TCP/2W/4W" to "1" for 2-wire operation under menu item:

"Op. Params. > Internal CAN Enable > Modbus TCP/2W/4W"

  3. Set the "Modbus Unit ID". The "Modbus Unit ID" must be different for each MMU.

  6. Connect a jumper wire between terminals 2 and terminal 3.

  7. Connect terminals 2 and 3 to the positive terminal of the monitoring equipment.

  8. Connect a jumper wire between terminals 4 and 5.

  9. Connect terminals 4 and 5 to the negative terminal of the monitoring equipment.

  10. Connect terminal 1 and/or 6 to the ground of the monitoring terminal

Full Duplex (4-Wire) Setup

  1. Log into UPSView with a valid user name and password.

  2. In UPSView, set "Modbus TCP/2W/4W" to "2" for 4-wire operation under the following menu choice:
