TH48-E80 Petroleum Transmission Caterpillar

Leakage from Lockup Clutch (Torque Converter) - Test

Usage:

TH48-E80 FRT
Note: Transmissions FRT1-1198 have modulating reducing style lock up clutch valves. Transmissions ; FRT1199-Up have electronic clutch pressure control "ECPC" style valves. Modulating reducing style and ECPC style lock up clutch valves require software with different application codes. Refer to Special Instruction, REHS4541, "Software Configuration Guide{3168, 4800, 4808, 7600, 7610, 7620}".

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from sudden machine movement.

Sudden movement of the machine or release of air pressure or oil pressure can cause injury to persons on or near the machine.

To help prevent possible injury before testing and adjusting any air system or hydraulic system, perform the procedure in the Testing and Adjusting, "General Information" section.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

This test will determine if there are bad seals in the lockup clutch.

Pressure tap for torque converter lockup clutch "LUC GAUGE" effective on FRT00001-FRT01198

  1. Remove the fitting from the pressure tap.

  2. Connect 6V-4143 Coupler and 177-7861 Hose to port "LUC GAUGE". Place the other end of the hose into a container.

  3. Start the engine. Run the engine at a low idle rpm with the transmission in NEUTRAL.

  4. Measure the amount of oil that comes out of the pressure tap in 1 minute. Install the fitting when this check is complete.

Problem: More than 3.8 L/min (1 US gpm) of oil comes out of the pressure tap.

Probable Cause

There are bad seals in the lockup clutch.
