  • A new installation procedure for the camshaft gear includes a process for cleaning the taper of the camshaft and the tapered bore of the camshaft gear. There is also a revised procedure for tightening the bolt for the camshaft gear.

Installation Procedure for the Camshaft Drive Gear

    1. Clean the taper of the camshaft and clean the tapered bore of the camshaft gear with a lint free cloth that is saturated with a solvent in order to remove any excess oil. Clean the parts again with a lint free alcohol wipe in order to remove any residue. If the alcohol wipe is dirty after cleaning the parts, clean the parts again with a lint free alcohol wipe until no residue is left on the alcohol wipe.

Note: It is critical that the taper of the camshaft and the tapered bore of the camshaft gear are clean, dry, and free of residue before assembly.

    1. Repeat step 1 for the remaining camshaft and camshaft gear.

    1. Ensure that both camshafts have the pins in place.

    1. Ensure that the flywheel has the pin in place.

    1. Install the camshaft gears onto the camshafts and remove any backlash by rotating the gears in the opposite direction of engine rotation.

For "Standard Rotation" engines, turn the camshaft gears clockwise.

For "Reverse Rotation" engines, turn the camshaft gears counterclockwise.

    1. Install the timing ring, the accessory drive gear, or the plate according to the assembly.

Note: Ensure that the hole in the timing ring is properly seated on the locating pin.

    Torque Procedure

    1. Tighten the retaining bolts for the camshaft gears.

      Torque ... 360 N·m (265 lb ft)

    1. Mark a vertical line on the head of the bolt for the camshaft gear. Refer to Illustration 1.

      Vertical line

    1. Place a driver against the retaining plate of the camshaft gear. Strike the driver solidly with a hammer 3 to 4 times.

    1. Tighten the retaining bolts for the camshaft gears again.

      Torque ... 360 N·m (265 lb ft)

    1. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until the mark on the bolt turns a minimum of 90 degrees. Refer to Illustration 2.
