Start By:

  1. Remove the bucket.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, PERJ1017, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Position the machine on a hard, level surface. Position drain plug (1) for each final drive , as shown. Drain the oil from each final drive into a suitable container for storage or disposal. The capacity of each final drive is 10 L (2.6 US gal).

  2. The following procedure removes the sun gear from a typical final drive. A different final drive may require a slightly different procedure to remove the sun gear.

    1. Remove bolts (2) and cover (3) from each final drive.

      ------ WARNING! ------

      Without the sun gear in place, the brakes are ineffective. Personal injury or death could result. Provide other means to hold or stop the machine.


    2. Remove sun gear (4) from each final drive.

    3. Temporarily reinstall cover (3) on each final drive.

  3. Remove right hand boom cylinder (5). Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Boom Cylinder - Remove and Install".

  4. Start the machine. Fully extend the stick cylinder. Raise or lower the boom until the center of the pin bore for the bucket is approximately the same height as the bottom of the counterweight.

  5. Adjust the length of Tooling (A). Install the bolts, the washers, and the nuts that hold Tooling (A) together. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 360 ± 50 N·m (266 ± 37 lb ft). Install Tooling (A) in place of the right hand boom cylinder.

  6. Install Tooling (B) under the stick.

  7. Separate the tracks. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Track - Separate".

  8. Disconnect hose assemblies (6) and (7).

  9. Remove bolts (11) and split flanges (10). Reposition hose assemblies (8).

  10. Disconnect hose assemblies (12) and (13). Remove tee (13) to provide clearance.

  11. Remove bolts (9).

  12. Position Tooling (C) and Tooling (D) under the machine. Refer to Tool Operating Manual, NEHS1328, "Lift Groups (Stand - 60 Ton)" for more information on Tooling (D).

  13. Disconnect tube assembly (15). Remove two of bolts (10). Install two guide studs (17) for installation purposes.

  14. Remove the remainder of bolts (16).

  15. Use Tooling (C) and (D) to raise the upper structure off the undercarriage. Raise the upper structure until the upper structure is above the swivel joint . Adjust the height of Tooling (B) to keep the upper structure level. The weight of the upper structure is approximately 14515 kg (32000 lb).

  16. Install a suitable towing device onto undercarriage frame assembly (18). Use a suitable towing device and slowly pull undercarriage frame assembly (18) away from the upper structure. The weight of undercarriage frame assembly (18) is approximately 9525 kg (21000 lb).
