This Special Instruction includes test procedures for piston pumps. This Special Instruction also provides specifications. The technician should have a good understanding of hydraulic piston pumps. The technician should be educated in the operation of the hydraulic test bench. The test benches that are in this document are available through the Caterpillar Service Tool Division. Gather all necessary tooling before you need to hook up the pump. Some of the required tooling appears in a table at the end of this document. There are many possible variations of tooling that could be used. Not every possible variation can be listed.

Pump test pressures in this guideline may exceed the normal operating range of the hydraulic test hoses utilized when connecting the tested pump to the test bench. However, the order of magnitude of these pressures is significantly below the burst strength of the Caterpillar "XT6" product.

High pressure oil can escape through improperly assembled hoses and fittings. High pressure oil can also escape through poorly maintained hoses and fittings. High pressure oil may also leak through hose that has become damaged over the life of the hose due to the pressure levels that occur during test bench operation.

Personal injury or death can result from improper hose & fitting inspection or improper hose replacement procedures. Escaping fluid under pressure can penetrate body tissue causing serious injury, and possible death.

Thoroughly inspect all testing hoses, fittings, and quick disconnects prior to any testing operation. Check the assembly date tag or hose assembly log date for a hose life indicator. Replace all Test Bench hoses at a minimum of every 2 years or earlier if the hose or fittings appear to be damaged.

Pump Pre-Test Set Up

  1. Install quick disconnect fittings in the pressure port for negative flow control (50) and the power shift pressure port (53). Refer to the Illustrations 7 and 7.

    Vent both pressure ports for negative flow control (50) to the atmosphere. Connect the signal pressure oil supply from the test bench to the power shift pressure port (53) .

  1. Connect both pump discharge ports (54) to the individual flow meter loops on the test bench.

  1. Connect the discharge port for the pilot pump (49) to an in-line flow meter in order to measure the discharge of the pilot pump.

  1. Connect the pump suction port (54) to the test bench oil supply.

  1. Purge all air from the suction line before rotating the pump. Loosen the suction hose at the pump until oil leaks from the connection. Tighten the suction hose.

  1. Carefully loosen the case vent plug (57). This will release the air pressure of the case in order to allow the case to fill with oil from the suction line.

  1. Make sure that the pump case is full of oil before rotating. Secure the case vent plug (57).

  1. Do not rotate the pump in the wrong direction. The correct direction of rotation will be stated on the pump. The direction of rotation is viewed from the input shaft end. Visually check the pump for proper rotation.

Test Procedure

Note: The steps in the procedure correlate with the steps under the test specifications according to your specific part number.

The hydraulic oil in the test bench should meet a contamination rating of ISO 16/13 or cleaner. The oil in the test bench should be one of the following.

  • SAE 10W at 50 °C (122 °F) or

  • Mobil DTE-11 at 46 °C (115 °F)

  1. Start rotating the pump according to Step 1 of the test specifications. Listen for abnormal noise and verify flow from the pilot pump discharge port (49). Verify that all connections are tight. Check for leaks around shaft seals. Check for leaks around the control valve.

    Run the pump for at least 5 minutes in order to raise the temperature of the oil and purge the system of air.

    Load the pilot discharge to the value in the test specifications.

  1. Use the following steps to verify that the constant horsepower is operating properly and that the maximum displacement is set. Both pumps will be tested at the same time. Compare the flow rates at each step to the values in the test specifications. Refer to the Illustration 15 for an example of the horsepower curve.

    1. Increase the input RPM, signal pressure from the test bench to the power shift pressure port (53) according to Step 2.a of the test specifications.

      Adjust the adjustment screw for maximum displacement (56) if the discharge flow is not within specifications. Loosen the locknut and turn the adjustment screw for maximum displacement (56) counterclockwise in order to increase the flow. Turn the adjustment screw for the maximum displacement (56) clockwise in order to decrease the flow.

    1. Use the test bench to load both pumps to the value in Step 2.b of the test specifications.

      This is the destroke point. The pumps should now be under constant horsepower control. Slowly cycle the load to both pumps to the value in Step 2.b of the test specifications. This step verifies that the pump is starting to destroke. When the pump discharge pressure increases to a value more than Step 2.b of the test specifications the discharge flow should begin dropping. Adjust the screw for constant horsepower (52) if the point of destroke of either pump is not correct.

      Loosen the locknut on the adjustment screw for constant horsepower (52). Turn the adjustment screw for constant horsepower (52) clockwise in order to increase the flow rate to the value in the test specifications. Turn the adjustment screw for constant horsepower (52) counterclockwise in order to decrease the flow rate to the value in the test specifications.

    1. Load the pump by using the test bench to the value in Step 2.c of the test specifications.

    1. Load the pump by using the test bench to the value in Step 2.d of the test specifications.

      Note: Disassemble the pump control and install new springs if the discharge rates in Steps 2.c and 2.d are not within the specifications.

  1. Verify the operation of the control of negative flow by using the following steps. Both pumps will be tested at the same time. Compare the flow rates at each step to the values in the test specifications. Refer to Illustration 17 for an example of a curve of negative flow control.

    Decrease the input rpm and all pressures to zero. Disconnect the signal pressure of the test bench from the power shift pressure port (53). Vent the power shift pressure port (53) to the atmosphere. Connect the pressure ports for the negative flow control (50) to the signal pressure of the test bench by using a 196-8722 Tee (64) as indicated by Illustration 16.

    1. Increase the input rpm and discharge pressure to both pump discharge ports (54). Increase signal pressure from the test bench to the negative pressure ports for flow control (50) according to Step 3.a of the test specifications.

      This is the destroke point. The pump should now be under negative flow control. Slowly cycle both pumps' pressure for the negative flow control to the value in Step 3.a of the test specifications. This verifies that the pump is starting to destroke. When the negative flow control pressure increases to a value more than Step 3.a of the test specifications the discharge flow should begin dropping. Adjust the adjustment screw for the negative flow control (51) if either pump's point of destroke is not correct.

      Loosen the locknut in order to adjust the adjustment screw for negative flow control (51). Turn the adjustment screw for negative flow control (51) counterclockwise in order to increase the flow rate to the value in the test specifications. Turn the adjustment screw for negative flow control (51) clockwise in order to decrease the flow rate to the value in the test specifications.

    1. Increase negative flow control pressure to the pressure port for negative flow control (50) according to Step 3.b of the test specifications.

    1. Increase the negative flow control pressure to the pressure port for negative flow control (50) according to Step 3.c of the test specifications.

  1. For this test, only one pump will be tested at a time. The pump that is not being tested will remain at standby.

    Decrease the input rpm and all pressures to zero. Remove the signal pressure from the test bench to the pump that is being tested. Vent the negative flow control pressure ports (50) to the atmosphere. Connect signal pressure from the test bench to the power shift pressure port (53). Connect the 1U-6392 Pressure Reducing Valve outlet (61) to the pressure port for negative flow control (50) to the pump on standby. Connect the 1U-6392 Pressure Reducing Valve inlet (60) to a pressure port from the standby pump.

    Increase the input rpm to the value in Step 4 of the test specifications. Apply signal pressure to the power shift pressure port (53) according to the value in Step 4 of the test specifications. Load the stand by pump to the pressure value in Step 4 of the test specifications. Increase the negative flow control pressure to the negative flow control pressure port (50) on the pump at standby.

    Record the discharge rate of the test pump.

  1. Load the pump by using the test bench to the value in Step 5 in the test specifications. Subtract the discharge flow in Step 5 from Step 4 of the test specifications. This value is internal leakage. The internal leakage should not exceed the value in Step 5 of the test specifications. If the internal leakage is too high, the pump may not be mechanically feasible and the pump should be disassembled and inspected in order to diagnose the problem.

    Unload the pump and repeat Steps 4 and 5 for the other pump that has not been tested.

Reduce RPM and all pressures to zero. Remove the component from the bench. Drain the oil from the pump. Plug all of the ports.
