Removal Procedure

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from fumes, gases and ultraviolet rays from the weld arc.

Welding can cause fumes, burn skin and produce ultraviolet rays.

Keep your head out of the fumes. Use ventilation, exhaust at the arc, or both, to keep fumes and gases from your breathing area. Wear eye, ear and body protection before working.

Protect yourself and others; read and understand this warning. Fumes and gases can be dangerous to your health. Ultraviolet rays from the weld arc can injure eyes and burn skin. Electric shock can cause death.

Read and understand the manufacturer's instructions and your employer's safety practices. Do not touch live electrical parts.

NOTICE

Before carrying out arc welding on the machine or on any equipment attached to the machine, disconnect all power and ground leads from the batteries in order to avoid possible damage to electronic components.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from flame cutting or welding on painted areas.

The effect of gasses from burned paint is a hazard to the person doing the cutting or welding.

Do not flame cut or weld on painted areas.

  1. Refer to the Service Manual, "Grapple - Remove" in order to remove the push bar from the stick bracket.

  1. Attach an appropriate nylon lifting sling and a hoist to the stick bracket. The weight of each stick bracket is listed in Table 1.

  1. Grind away the weld from the stick bracket and the stick with a hand grinder.

  1. Grind away any remaining weld and grind away any burrs in order to have a smooth surface.

  1. When you have finished welding, remove all of the damaged paint. Paint the bare metal with primer. When the primer is dry, paint the area with a coat of paint.

Installation Procedure

The Special Instruction, GEBI0091 is for the installation of the stick bracket for the Mechanical Work Tools. The stick bracket is welded to the stick of the host machine. The weight of each stick bracket is shown in Table 1. If you need more information about the installation of the stick bracket to your machine, consult your Caterpillar dealer.

Note: Before you weld the stick bracket to the stick of the host machine, ensure that the ground of the welder is located close to the bracket. The ground of the welder must be placed so that no current can pass through the bearings.

Note: Before you perform the steps below, you must ensure that the work tool is compatible to the host machine. Consult your Caterpillar dealer for more information.

Note: Before you weld the stick bracket to the stick of the host machine, you must remove the paint. Before you weld the stick bracket to the stick of the host machine, you must remove any grease or dirt.

  1. In order to locate the stick bracket, extend the bucket cylinder or retract the bucket cylinder until the Dimension (L) is correct. For the correct dimensions, refer to Table 2.

    Illustration 3g00731719

  1. Center the stick bracket on the stick. Measure the clearance (G) on each side of the stick. Refer to Illustration 3.

Note: You must follow this procedure if the stick bracket is narrower than the stick of the host machine.

      Illustration 4g00575213

      (A) 40°

      (B) 20 mm (0.78 inch)

      (C) 13 mm (0.51 inch)

      (D) 13 mm (0.51 inch)

      (E) Front of the stick bracket and rear of the stick bracket

      (F) 30 mm (1.2 inch)

Note: The stick bracket is supplied with two mounting plates for the side of the bracket. Do not use the side plates for mounting the bracket to the stick when the stick is wider than the mounting bracket.

Note: Before you weld the stick bracket to the stick, you must ensure that the stick bracket does not interfere with the movement of the work tool.

    1. In order to attach the stick bracket to the stick, weld the bracket on all four sides to the stick. Refer to View 1 in Illustration 4 if the stick is more than 38 mm (1.5 inch) wider than the stick bracket. Refer to View 2 in Illustration 4 if the stick is less than 38 mm (1.5 inch) wider than the stick bracket. If the stick is less than 38 mm (1.5 inch) wider than the stick bracket, the bottom of the stick bracket must be machined. Refer to Illustration 4 for the welding dimensions. Refer to Illustration 4 for the dimensions in order to machine the stick bracket.

    1. Refer to Illustration 4 when you end the welds at Location (E). Allow the welds to run out.

Note: You must use this procedure if the stick bracket is wider than the stick of the host machine.

Note: When the stick bracket is wider than the stick of the host machine, you must use the two side plates.

Note: Do not weld the front of the stick bracket to the stick. Do not weld the rear of the stick bracket to the stick. Weld only the side plates to the stick.

    1. Use a fillet weld in order to weld the side plates to the stick bracket.

    1. Weld the side plate to the stick. The welds should be 6 mm (0.24 inch).

  1. When you have finished welding, remove the welding spatter. Remove all of the damaged paint. Paint the bare metal with primer. When the primer is dry, paint the area with a coat of paint.
