Usage:

3508B (2BM, 3DM, 4GM, 7SM, 6PN);
3512B (7HM, 8EM, 8RM, 4TN, 6WN);
3516B (6HN, 7RN, 8CN, 8KN, 9AN)

Introduction

This special instruction discusses the method of supplying battery power to the Customer Communication Module (CCM) and Programmable Relay Control Module (PRCM) on 3500B engines with Electronic Instrument Panels (EIP).

Adaptability

The Customer Communication Module (CCM) is adaptable with 3508B (4GM, 6PN), 3512B (8RM, 6WN), and 3516B (6HN, 7RN) Generator Set Engines; and 3508B (3DM), 3512B (8EM), and 3516B (9AN) Marine Auxiliary Engines.

The Programmable Relay Control Module (PRCM) is adaptable with 3508B (4GM, 6PN), 3512B (8RM, 6WN), and 3516B (6HN, 7RN) Generator Set Engines; 3508B (3DM), 3512B (8EM), and 3516B (9AN) Marine Auxiliary Engines; and 3508B (2BM, 7SM), 3512B (4TN, 7HM), and 3516B (8CN, 8KN) Marine Engines.

General Information

Prior to December 1, 1995, 3500B Engines do not have CCM and PRCM circuitry inside the Electronic Instrument Panel (EIP). Engines built after this date will have circuits installed but their wiring schematic will not reflect the additions.

The next production update of the wiring schematic which will reflect these changes will occur during the second quarter of 1996.

Description Of Change

The current wiring schematic (SENR1005, SENR1009, SENR1010) does not show the circuits that supply battery power to the CCM and PRCM. If these circuits were not installed in the EIP at the factory, they must be installed prior to CCM or PRCM connection to the engine via the 24-pin Customer Connector located on the bottom of the EIP. To supply battery power to either the CCM or PRCM, the circuit shown in Illustration 1 for the CCM and the circuit shown in Illustration 2 for the PRCM must be added inside the Instrument Box.

Illustration 1. Additional circuits inside Instrument Box for CCM power control: Lead (1) between CCM terminal 5 (+Batt) (2) of 9X-0145 Connector Receptacle Assembly (4) and 114-1142 Circuit Breaker Assembly (3). Lead (6) between CCM terminal 23 (-Batt) (7) of 9X-0145 Connector Receptacle Assembly (4) and TB-2 (5).

Additions to the CCM circuit include a lead between terminal 5 (+Batt) of 9X-0145 Connector Receptacle Assembly and 114-1142 Circuit Breaker Assembly; and a lead between terminal 23 (-Batt) of 9X-0145 Connector Receptacle Assembly and TB-2.

Illustration 2. Additional circuits inside Instrument Box for PRCM power control: Lead (9) between PRCM terminal 6 (+Batt) (10) of 9X-0145 Connector Receptacle Assembly (4) and 9Y-2921 Relay (8). Lead (11) between PRCM terminal 22 (-Batt) (12) of 9X-0145 Connector Receptacle Assembly (4) and TB-2 (5).

Additions to the PRCM circuit include a lead between PRCM terminal 6 (+Batt) of 9X-0145 Connector Receptacle Assembly and 9Y-2921 Relay; and a lead between PRCM terminal 22 (-Batt) of 9X-0145 Connector Receptacle Assembly and TB-2.

After the circuits to supply battery power to the CCM and PRCM are installed in the EIP, the CCM and PRCM connection to the engine is made with the 24-pin customer connector. Connection of the CCM is shown in Illustration 3 and connection of the PRCM is shown in Illustration 4.

Illustration 4: Connecting Programmable Relay Control Module (18) to Instrument Box (13) [24-Pin Connector (15) and 40-Pin Connector (16)]

NOTE: Circuits 892 and 893 must use 123-2376 Electrical Cable. Connect the shield drain wire to the negative battery (-Batt) terminal of the CCM or PRCM.

To supply battery power to either the CCM or PRCM, the circuit shown in Illustration 3 for the CCM and the circuit shown in Illustration 4 for the PRCM must be added inside the Instrument Box.

NOTE: The jumper lead from the positive battery post on the back of the PRCM should go to terminal 1. Some PRCM units may have the jumper connected to terminal 2. If the jumper is connected to terminal 2, the PRCM will not power up. Remove the jumper from terminal 2 and move it to terminal 1. Illustration 5 shows the correct location for the jumper.

Installation

The operator will install the wiring inside the Instrument Box using the schematic shown in Illustration 1 for the CCM or using the schematic shown in Illustration 2 for the PRCM.

The CCM or PRCM will be turned on with the ECS in the "AUTO" (using a remote Start/Stop switch), "MAN.START", or "STOP" positions. The CCM or PRCM will be turned off with the ECS in the "OFF" or "AUTO" (using a remote Start/Stop switch) positions.

NOTE: Using the remote E-Stop switch function will NOT remove power from the CCM. Using the EIP mounted E-Stop button will remove power from the CCM.

NOTE: Neither the remote E-Stop switch nor the EIP mounted E-Stop button will remove power from the PRCM. This is required in order to maintain relay position status inside the PRCM in case an emergency stop is performed.
