Using the 4C6710 Governor Test Unit Group{0782, 1264}

Usage:

Introduction

The 4C6710 Governor Test Unit Group is designed to test and adjust Heinzmann® Electronic Governors, without the need to operate (run) the engine. This greatly simplifies both the installation and service of the governor.

The 4C6710 Governor Test Unit Group can be used to perform the following functions:

* Measure governor frequency when the engine is operating.
* Measure feedback voltage when the engine is stopped.
* Simulate the engine to perform the following:

Check governor frequency at different fuel levels.

Adjust and check the minimum and maximum governor frequency levels.

Adjust the speed droop during droop operation.

Check the effect of gain, stability, and derivative value settings on engine operation.

Components of 4C6710 Governor Test Unit Group


(1) 4C6711 Frequency Measurement Cable. (2) 4C6712 Governor Test Cable.

FREQUENCY RANGE: 100 - 10,000 Hz (± 5 Hz)

VOLTAGE RANGE: 1 - 6 Volts (± 50 mV)

SIMULATOR FREQUENCY: 150 - 8,000 Hz

OUTPUT VOLTAGE: 8 Volt (peak to peak) Maximum

CURRENT CONSUMPTION: 8 mA Maximum

BATTERY: 9 Volt

TEMPERATURE RANGE: 0 - 45° C (32 - 104° F)

Changing the Battery

To change the battery, slide the cover off the rear of the test unit. Remove the old battery, then install a new 1U9534 Battery as a replacement.

Install the cover on the rear of the test unit.

Ten Pin Switch

The ten pin switch that is included in the 4C6710 Governor Test Unit Group, is plugged into the accessory connector on the governor control unit when its power supply is being checked. Instructions on how to make this check are given in the Service Manual for the Heinzmann Governor.

Frequency Measurement

1. Disconnect the speed pickup cable from the Heinzmann Governor Control Unit.

2. Connect one lead of 4C6711 Frequency Measurement Cable (1) between governor control unit (3) and speed pickup cable (5). Connect the other lead of cable (1) to governor test unit (4).

3. Set the Function Switch on governor control test unit (4) to FREQUENCY MEASUREMENT, position "1". Turn governor test unit (4) switch to the ON position. When the engine is operating, governor frequency will be displayed in Hz.

To convert rpm to Hz, use the formula that follows:

Frequency (Hz) = No. of flywheel teeth x rpm ÷ 60.

For 3600 Family Engines that have a standard 255 tooth flywheel, refer to the chart that follows:

Actuator Feedback Voltage Measurement

1. Disconnect the speed pickup cable from the Heinzmann Governor Control Unit.

2. Install 4C6712 Governor Test Cable (2) between governor control unit (3) and governor test unit (4). Connect clip lead (6) to TP-6 on governor control unit (3) as shown.

3. Set the Function Switch on test unit (4) to FEEDBACK VOLTAGE, position "2". The display will show the feedback voltage in millivolts. Refer to the Service Manual for the Heinzmann Governor for adjustment procedures.

Engine Simulation

------ WARNING! ------

The engine must not be started when the governor test unit is connected to the governor control unit. This could result in engine overspeed or personal injury.

-------WARNING!-------

In this test, the 4C6710 Governor Test Unit will simulate a very slow engine.

1. Disconnect the speed pickup cable from the Heinzmann Governor Control Unit. Install 4C6712 Governor Test Cable (2) between governor control unit (3) and governor test unit (4).

2. Connect clip lead (6) to TP-6 on governor control unit (3) as shown.

NOTE: If accessories are used, disconnect the accessories connector (7) on the Heinzmann Governor Control Unit. Failure to do this will cause the wrong frequency to be displayed.

3. Set the Function Switch on test unit (4) to ENGINE SIMULATION, position "3". Refer to the Service Manual for the Heinzmann Governor for information needed to perform the static checks and/or adjustments that follow.

* Rated Speed.
* Idle Speed.
* Droop.
* Start Fuel Limit.

NOTE: If the digital display on governor test unit (4) reads "ZERO" at any time, turn the unit OFF, then turn it ON again. If this does not change the "ZERO" reading on the digital display, turn the load potentiometer fully counterclockwise (CCW [left]) for several seconds to reset the display. Check the condition of the battery in governor test unit (4). Install a new battery if needed.

Parts and Service Repair Information

If the governor test unit does not operate correctly, remove the 9 Volt battery that is used for the power source and install a new 1U9534 Battery as a replacement. If the unit still does not operate correctly return it, freight prepaid, to one of the addresses that follow.

When the governor test unit is returned for repair or service, always give the the following information.

* Name and telephone number of the person designated to receive the part after it is repaired.
* Description of the problem.
* Serial number (if applicable).
* Where to send the part after it is repaired (shipping address).
* Billing address if different than the shipping address.

Units less than one year old will be repaired under warranty (except for abuse). The cost of out-of-warranty repairs will be charged to the owner.
