Table 1
Required Tools
1U9755     Hydraulic Jack     1
4C5647     Pry Bar     1
8T5096     Dial Indicator     1

Note: After installation of the drum assembly, the clearance between the vertical bushings and the vertical pins must be checked.

Vertical Steering Pivot Clearance

The following steps should be done in order to check the vertical steering pivot clearance.

  1. Put the machine on a hard level surface. Stop the engine and apply the parking brake.

    Illustration 1g00534936

Typical example of Articulating and Oscillating Hitch

  1. Attach the base of 8T-5098 Dial Indicator to the top of the steering pivot housing. Set the dial indicator actuator on the top of the rear frame.

  1. Set the dial indicator to zero.

  1. Place 1U-9755 Hydraulic Jack under the rear frame at the pivot assembly.

  1. Raise the hydraulic jack and record the reading on the dial indicator.

Note: Only add spacers or remove spacers at the top pivot point.

  1. With the installation of new bearings and shims, the total movement should be 0.13 to 1.14 mm (0.005 to .045 inch). The total vertical movement on a machine, which is not new, should not exceed 1.91 mm (0.075 inch). If the movement is too great, the clearance can be reduced by adding spaces at the vertical pin joints. If the movement is too small, the clearance is increased by removing spaces at the vertical pin joint.

  1. If the proper clearance cannot be obtained with the spacers, the steering pivot housing should be disassembled. Bushings or any other worn components should be replaced.

Horizontal Steering Pivot Clearance

The following steps should be done in order to check the horizontal steering pivot clearance.

  1. Put the machine on a hard level surface. Stop the engine and apply the parking brake.

    Illustration 2g00535011

Typical example of Articulating and Oscillating Hitch

  1. Attach the base of 8T-5098 Dial Indicator to the top of the steering pivot housing. Set the dial indicator actuator on the top of the rear frame.

  1. Set the dial indicator to zero.

  1. Place 1U-9755 Hydraulic Jack under the rear frame at the pivot assembly.

  1. Raise the hydraulic jack and record the reading on the dial indicator.

  1. With the installation of new bearings and shims, the total movement should be 0.10 to .76 mm (0.004 to .03 inch). The total horizontal movement on a machine, which is not new, should not exceed 1.27 mm (0.050 inch).

  1. If the movement is too great, the steering pivot housing should be disassembled. Bushings or any other worn components should be replaced.

Oscillation Clearance

The following steps should be done in order to check the oscillation clearance.

Note: Prior to installing the drum into the yoke during assembly, the clearance measurement should be made.

  1. Put the machine on a hard level surface. Stop the engine and apply the parking brake.

    Illustration 3g00535077

Typical example of Articulating and Oscillating Hitch

  1. Attach the base of 8T-5098 Dial Indicator to the steering pivot housing. Set the dial indicator against the front face of the yoke center plate.

  1. Insert 4C-5647 Pry Bar between the yoke assembly and the steering pivot housing. Exert force on the pry bar in order to move the drum and the yoke assembly as far forward as possible.

Note: Only add shims or remove shims behind the plate. Remove equal amounts or add equal amounts at the top and at the bottom of the plate.

  1. The total movement of a new assembly should be 0.05 to .25 mm (0.002 to .010 inch). The maximum reading for a used assembly should be 0.51 mm (0.020 inch). If the movement is too large, clearance is reduced by the removal of shims behind the plate. If the movement is too small, clearance is increased by the addition of shims.

Note: If zero end play or a preload torque is present, then inadequate bearing lubrication may result.

  1. If proper clearance cannot be obtained with the removal or the addition of shims, then the oscillation assembly should be disassembled. Bushings or any other worn components should be replaced.
