Starting The Engine

Usage:

ETHER IS FLAMMABLE - USE WITH CAUTION

1. Place the transmission in NEUTRAL (and disengage flywheel clutch, if so equipped).
2. Push accelerator pedal to half engine speed position. (1674 and 1693: Before normal oil pressure is reached, the governor control linkage travel limits engine speed. Do not attempt to force it past the stop.)
3. Turn key switch to ON.
4. Turn heat-start switch to HEAT or START, as indicated by the chart.
5. After indicated heat time, move switch to the START position, and if ether is necessary, discharge ether capsule or spray ether into air cleaner inlet. (If engine fails to start within 30 seconds, release the starter switch and wait 60 seconds to allow the starter motor to cool before using it again.)
6. As soon as engine starts, reduce engine speed to low idle. In extreme cold it may be desired to move switch to HEAT position until the engine runs smoothly, then release the switch.
7. Do not apply load to the engine or increase engine speed until oil pressure registers on gauge. (Oil pressure should raise to normal within 60 seconds after engine starts.)
8. Operate the engine at low load until all systems reach operating temperatures. Check all gauges during warm-up period.

NOTE: EACH GLOW PLUG DRAWS APPROXIMATELY 12.5 AMPERES WHILE HEATING. THIS IS A SMALL CURRENT DRAW IN COMPARISON TO THE ELECTRIC STARTER LOAD.
