D400E Series II (8PS) ARTICULATED TRUCKS
Problem:
There have been recent reports of noise from the steering system. The noise is a groaning sound that can be heard when the steering wheel is being turned. In some cases vibration can be felt through the cab floor and also in the drain line from the 160-9727 Metering Pump Gp. The noise can vary with operating conditions and with temperature.
The noise does not occur on every machine. The noise is associated with the 160-8617 Check Valve Gp that is located in the drain line from the 160-9727 Metering Pump Gp. The location of the 160-8617 Check Valve Gp is shown in the photograph.
Solution:
If there is noise as described above from the steering system, modify the 160-8617 Check Valve Gp using the following procedure:
- 1. Relieve pressure in the hydraulic tank by loosening the filler cap.
- 2. Clean the surrounding area and remove the 160-8617 Check Valve Gp. Plug open ports to prevent dirt from entering the system.
NOTE: Disconnect the hose carefully in case there is residual pressure in the line. Use a suitable container and absorbent cloth to catch oil spillage.
- 3. Disassemble the 160-8617 Check Valve Gp and drill a 1 mm diameter hole in the valve poppet at the location shown in the illustration.
- 4. Ensure all dirt, drill filings and sharp edges are removed then assemble the Check Valve Gp.
- 5. Install the Check Valve Gp on the machine. Tighten the Check Valve Gp to a torque of 285 N·m. Tighten the hose to a torque of 130 N·m.
- 6. Tighten the filler cap.
