In order to allow equitable parts availability to all participating dealers, please limit your initial parts order to not exceed 39% of dealership population. This is an initial order recommendation only, and the ultimate responsibility for ordering the total number of parts needed to satisfy the program lies with the dealer.

ACTION REQUIRED

Initial Inspection:

1. Locate the lift arm pivot pin on the machine. Refer to Image1. Grease the LH and RH pins prior to next step.

2. Attach an empty 60 inch bucket or similar to the machine. Set the engine rpm to low idle setting and cycle the lift arm through raise and lower operations. Listen for squealing or grinding noise from the lift arms hinge assembly.

- If machine completes 2.0 hours of cycle testing with no evidence of squealing or grinding noise, then no rework is needed on the machine.

- Stop cycle testing immediately if squealing or grinding noise is heard from the lift arm hinge pins on either the LH or RH side. Follow the steps located in the attached Rework Procedure.

PRIORITY - PRODUCT IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM FOR INSPECTION AND REWORK OF LIFT ARM PIN ASSEMBLY

MODELS INVOLVED - CERTAIN 216B3 AND 226B3 SKID STEER LOADERS

Dear Cat Product Owner:

The lift arm pin assembly needs to be inspected for squealing and grinding noise on the products listed below. The existing lift arm pin assembly can become galled during the lift arm raise and lower cycles resulting in squealing and grinding noise. You will not be charged for the service performed.

Contact your local Cat dealer immediately to schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time required to complete this service.

If you are no longer the owner of this product(s), please contact your local Cat dealer so that our records can be updated. Please refer the dealer to their Service Letter dated 04May2015 when scheduling this service.

We regret the inconvenience this may cause you, but urge you to have this service performed as soon as possible to prevent unscheduled downtime.

Rework Procedure

1. Follow instructions per UENR0252, Disassembly and Assembly, "Lift Arms ? Remove - Radial Arc Machine", to remove the LH and RH A-pin assemblies in order to remove the pin assembly from the loader frame. Visually confirm galling on the pin or on the bearing surface. Refer to Image1.1.1 and 1.1.2.
Image1.1.1
Image1.1.2

2. Place the lift arm on a stable surface and secure it such that the lift arm does NOT move when the Rework Procedure is administered.

Note: Ensure that no damage is done to any of the parts sub-assembled to the lift arm during removal and subsequent rework.

3. Locate the four bearings pressed into the lift arm on either side. Refer to Image1.3.1.
Image1.3.1

4. Use a blunt punch tool in order to push the bearing out. Refer to Image1.4.1.

Note: Ensure that the bearings get pushed out evenly and the lift arm bore is not damaged.
Image1.4.1

Bore Measurement:

1. Clean all four bore surfaces prior to measurement. Use an accurate bore diameter measuring equipment such as a bore gauge with micrometer or a digital bore gauge. Nominal diameter is 39.93mm.

2. Measure the bore inner diameter using the bore gauge in four planes as shown in Image1.5.1. Slide the bore gauge through the depth of the bore and write down the lowest diameter reading on each orientation. Repeat this step for all four bores.
Image1.5.1

3. Review the measured data against the lower specification limit of 39.905mm for the bore and calculate the difference in inner diameter in all individual planes and prepare for removing excess material from specific locations.

Note: If the measured data is within 39.905 and 39.955 then skip Step 4.

4. Use 80 grit flap wheel or suitable tool to remove material from the bore. Ensure that the tool is not misaligned bore axis. Refer to Image1.7.1. Frequently measure the bore inner diameter using an accurate bore gauge to ensure no excess material is removed. Repeat this process for all four bores. The Final measurement should read between a lower specification limit 39.905mm and an upper specification limit of 39.955mm.
Image1.7.1

5. Proceed to press in the new bearings. Ensure the outer diameter surface is clean of any oil residue or rust preventive. Align the bearings as shown in Image1.8.1. Use an appropriate bearing press in order to push the bearings. Do NOT use any impact tools to press in the bearings. Repeat this process for installing other bearings.
Image1.8.1

6. After bearing install, confirm that the inner diameter measurement is within a lower specification limit of 31.888mm and an upper specification Limit of 31.974mm.

7. If readings fall below the lower specification limit, remove the bearing and use a flap wheel to remove any additional material from lift arm bore. Refer to previous steps for details.

8. Follow instructions per UENR0252, Disassembly and Assembly, "Lift Arms ? Install -Radial Arc Machine", to assemble the lift arm to the machine chassis. Ensure that the bearing surface is slightly greased prior to lift arm install. Slightly grease new 1428790/">142-8790 Pin Assembly prior to installation. Reuse the 3B-8489 Grease Fitting. Ensure that the pins are greased properly prior to operation of the lift arm. Refer to SEBU8495, Operation and Maintenance Manual, Maintenance Section, "Lift Arm and Cylinder Linkage - Lubricate".
