Belt Tightener

Usage:

Remove & Install Belt Tightener


Typical Example


NOTICE

Make sure the breaker bar is seated in the hole in the arm assembly before the V-belts are removed.


1. Use a 3/4" breaker bar to release the tension on the V-belts. Remove V-belts (1) from belt tightener (6).

2. Remove the cotter pins and pins (2) that hold springs (3) to the belt tightener. Remove the springs from bracket assembly (5).

3. Disconnect hose assembly (7) from the belt tightener.

4. Remove the bolt, plate (4) and belt tightener (6) from the shaft.

5. Remove the four bolts and bracket assembly (5) from the bracket.

NOTE: The following steps are for installation of the belt tightener.

6. Put bracket assembly (5) in position and install the four bolts that hold it.

7. Put belt tightener (6) in position on the shaft, and install plate (4) and the bolt.

8. Put springs (3) in position on bracket assembly (5) and belt tightener (6). Install the pins and cotter pins to hold the springs to the belt tightener.

9. Connect hose assembly (7).

10. Use a 3/4" breaker bar to move the belt tightener toward the crankshaft pulley, and install V-belts (1). See the topic "V-Belt Tension Chart" in the Specifications Manual for the correct belt tension.

Disassemble & Assemble Belt Tightener

Start By:

a. remove belt tightener

1. Remove four bolts (4), the washers, cover (6) and the gasket from pulley (3).

2. Remove bolt (8) and washer (10).

3. Remove pulley (3), spacer (9) and O-ring seal (5) from arm assembly (7).

4. Remove bearing (12) and spacer (2) from pulley (3).

5. Remove lip-type seal (11) and bearing (1) from the pulley.

NOTE: The following steps are for assembly of the belt tightener.

6. Install O-ring seal (5) and spacer (9) on arm assembly (7).

7. Put bearing (1) in position in pulley (3).

8. Use tool (A), and install lip-type seal (11) in pulley (3). Install the lip-type seal with the spring loaded lip toward the inside of the pulley. Put 5P960 Multipurpose Grease on the lip of the seal.

9. Put pulley (3) in position on arm assembly (7). Make sure lip-type seal (11) makes contact with spacer (9).

10. Install spacer (2) and bearing (12) on the shaft of arm assembly (7).

11. Install washer (10) and bolt (8).

12. Put the gasket and cover (6) in position on pulley (3), and install the washers and four bolts (4).

13. After the belt tightener has been installed, fill the belt tightener with 5P960 Multipurpose grease.
