Product Support Program For Replacing The Turbocharger Cartridge On Certain C-12 Truck Engines Caterpillar

NOTE: The information supplied in this service letter may not be valid after the termination date of this program. Do not perform the work outlined in this Service Letter after the termination date without first contacting your Caterpillar product analyst.

NOTE: This Program can be administered either before or after a failure. In either case the decision whether to apply the Program is made by the dealer. When reporting the repair, use "PS4346" as the Part Number and "7755" as the Group Number. If administered before failure, use "56" as the Warranty Claim Description Code and use "T" as the SIMS Description Code. If administered after failure, use "96" as the Warranty Claim Description Code and use "Z" as the SIMS Description Code.

Termination Date

Problem

One of the four back plate GT42 Turbocharger Bolts may become loose in certain C-12 Truck Engines.

Rework Procedure

Inspect the turbocharger and compare the serial number on the turbocharger to the serial numbers on the following list. If the number appears on the list, no further action is required. If the number does not appear on the list, complete the rework.

Replace the turbocharger's cartridge using the procedure outlined in Caterpillar Service Manual, SENR6597, Page 12 and RENR1322, Page 13.

Torque Specifications for 1378928 Cartridge Group

1. Impeller Housing:

- Tighten clamp to a torque of 18 N·m (160 lb in).

- Loosen clamp to a torque of 6 N·m (53 lb in).

- Tighten clamp to a torque of 14 ± 1.0 N·m (120 ± 9.0 lb in).

2. Compressor Clamp:

- Tighten clamp to a torque of 14 N·m (120 lb in).
