August 31, 1999Problem
The brake discs and plates need to be replaced for increased service life on certain 416B, 426B, 428B and 438B Backhoe Loaders. The brake discs and plates may not give desired service life. New brake discs and plates which have a wider wear path are now available to increase the service life.

- 8 - 9R9401 Disc - Rear Brake
- 1 - 551258 Housing Brake - Left (See note below)
- 1 - 551259 Housing Brake - Right (See note below)
- 8 - 1337234 Brake Plate
- 4 - 3J9196 Nut - Jam
NOTE: If possible, machine the existing brake housings. Otherwise, replace with new housings.
Action Required
Dismantle the rear axle housing (refer to service manual D&A) to allow access to the brake components. Inspect both left hand and right hand brake housings for evidence of scoring on the disc running surface of the housing. It may be necessary to machine or replace 551258 Housing - Left Hand and 551259 Housing - Right Hand. If the housings are to be machined, maintain a maximum stock removal of 0.25mm (0.010 in.). The parts required to adapt the new brake plates and discs are shown in the 'Parts Needed' list above.
NOTE: This is a 12-hour job.
