There are new specifications for clearance between the turbocharger turbine wheel blades and the turbine wheel cover ring. These specifications are used to determine the reusability of the turbine wheel cover ring. The turbine wheel cover ring can become worn during normal operation and during turbine water washing. If the clearance is more than the maximum limits, the turbocharger efficiency will decrease. This can result in decreased inlet manifold pressure and decreased engine performance.
The clearance between the turbocharger turbine wheel blades and the turbine wheel cover ring can be measured with a thickness (feeler) gauge. The clearance must be measured with the turbocharger completely assembled. It is recommended that the clearance be checked prior to disassembly for overhaul or nozzle cleaning.
Chart A provides a cross reference between the turbocharger group part number and the turbocharger turbine blade size (WG04, WG06, WG08, and WG10). This blade size is then referenced in Chart B. Chart B provides the maximum recommended clearances between the tip of the turbine blades and the turbine wheel cover ring.
