PS-110, PS-130 & PS-180 PNEUMATIC COMPACTORS FRONT BOLSTER G Caterpillar

Hub and Axle Assemblies

Usage:

Front Bolster Group (Shown with Tires Removed)
(1) Bolt. (2) Double wheel hub and axle. (3) Nut. (4) Pivot pin. (5) Single wheel hub and axle. (6) Double wheel hub and axle.

Remove Hub and Axle Assemblies

NOTE: These instructions assume that the front bolster group is installed on the machine. If the front bolster group has been removed, follow steps 4, 6, 8, 10, and 11 to remove the hub and axle assemblies.

1. Park the machine on a hard, level surface. Shut the engine off and apply the parking brake.

2. Block at least two of the rear wheels on both sides to ensure that the machine will not roll.

3. Block both sides of the front wheels. This will prevent the hub and axle assemblies from rolling, when removed.

4. Remove one nut (3) and one bolt (1) from each hub and axle assembly (2), (5), and (6).

5. Set two hydraulic jacks under the sides of the machine frame, as shown. Raise or lower the jacks as needed to remove load from pivot pins (4).

6. Drive one pivot pin (4) out of each hub and axle assembly (2), (5), and (6).

7. Raise the frame higher to separate the three hub and axle assemblies from the front bolster group.

8. Roll each hub and axle assembly away from the machine. Weight of each double wheel hub and axle assembly (2) and (6) is approximately 109 kg (240 lbs.). Weight of the single wheel hub and axle assembly (5) is approximately 59 kg (130 lbs.).

9. Set the frame down on two blocks, as shown. Blocks must be under the sides of the frame. Do not block under the center of the machine.

10. Examine pivot pins (4) for damage or excessive wear. Bent, cracked, or badly worn pins must be replaced with new parts.

11. Check mounting holes on hub and axle assemblies, and on primary and secondary bolsters. Look for cracks, enlarged holes, or other structural damage in these components. Repair or replace any damaged items before assembly.

Install Hub and Axle Assemblies

1. Move the single wheel hub and axle assembly (5) into place at the front bolster group. Weight of the hub and axle assembly is approximately 59 kg (130 lbs.).

2. Install pivot pin (4) through mounting holes on the front bolster group, and through hub and axle assembly (5).

3. Secure the pivot pin with bolt (1) and nut (3). Tighten the bolt to 47 N·m (35 lb. ft.).

4. Inspect welding material (7) on each side of the secondary bolster, as shown. Hub and axle assembly (5) must be perpendicular to the secondary bolster, and weld material (7) should prevent hub and axle assembly (5) from pivoting.

5. If welding material (7) is missing or damaged, new welds must be placed on the secondary bolster, as shown above.

NOTE: Welds (7) are used only for the single wheel hub and axle (5). The two double wheel hub and axle assemblies (2) and (6) must be allowed to pivot freely.

6. Move two double wheel hub and axle assemblies (2) and (6) into place at the front bolster group. Weight of each assembly is approximately 109 kg (240 lbs.).

7. Install pivot pins (4) through mounting holes on the front bolster group, and through each hub and axle assembly.

NOTE: If front bolster group is installed on the machine, the frame may have to be jacked up or down slightly to allow insertion of pivot pins (4).

8. Secure each pivot pin with bolt (1) and nut (3). Tighten each bolt to 47 N·m (35 lb. ft.).

9. If the front bolster group is installed on the machine, blocks should be removed from the frame. Lower the machine to the ground.
