New Type Of Paint Used On Some Caterpillar Products; Do Not Weld On Painted Surfaces

Usage:

Some Caterpillar products that were formerly painted with alkyd type paint, are now painted with polyurethane type paint. Should it become necessary to weld on products with this new paint, use normal precautions for welding on any painted materials. Some of those precautions are described in the following paragraph.

Do not weld on painted surfaces. Remove ALL paint from areas that are to be welded and do the welding in a open and/or well ventilated area. Welding on any painted surface can cause the paint to burn and give off toxic fumes. Breathing the toxic fumes from burning paint can be a health hazard. Also, welding on a painted surface can result in a poor quality (porous) weld. Always be sure to remove ALL the paint from areas to be welded.
