Changes To 9S240 Rack Position Tool Group; Revision To Special Instructions

Usage:

D353 And 3406 Engines

A change has been made to remove the 8S4622 Spring and 8S4623 Dust Cap from the 9S240 Rack Position Tool Group. These parts are used only in the rack setting procedure for 3406 Engines, and tests have shown that they are not necessary for this procedure. Also, the 9S215 and 8S2283 Dial Indicators are made by several different suppliers (factories), and some have a different thread for the dust cap. For this reason, the 8S4623 Dust Cap will not fit all 9S215 and 8S2283 Dial Indicators. The 8S4622 Spring and 8S4623 Dust Cap will still be available from the Parts Department, but will not be part of the 9S240 Rack Position Tool Group.

Two changes must be made to Special Instruction Form SEHS6995-02 "Using 8S2305, 9S228 and 9S240 Rack Position Tool Groups". The first change is on Page 39: Under "3406-90U, 91U, 92U, 70V", remove all reference to the 8S4622 Spring (Item 8) and 8S4623 Dust Cap (Item 7). These items are not necessary, and are no longer part of the 9S240 Tool Group.

The second change is on Page 11. The procedure that starts on Page 11 is shown under a topic "D353, D9, 594 With Hydra-Mechanical Governor". This procedure, as given, is correct for the engines in D9 Tractors and 594 Pipelayers, but D353 Industrial and Marine Engines do not have the hole for the dial indicator adapter. To check the rack setting on D353 Industrial and Marine Engines, the dial indicator must be installed as shown on Page 10 for D353 Engines with mechanical governors. Adjust the dial indicator to zero, then follow the remainder of the procedure as shown for the hydra-mechanical governors.

Until revisions are made, make a note of these changes in your copy of the Special Instruction, Form SEHS6995-02.
