If an ECM replacement is necessary, all of the customer specified parameters and J1/P1 settings for optional input and output selections need to be programmed into the new ECM. If the previous ECM communicates with Cat Electronic Technician (Cat ET), you can use the "Copy Configuration" in ET to copy the parameters to program the new ECM. If the ECM being replaced does not communicate with ET, the parameters will all need to be programmed manually. Considering the growing number of parameters and feature options, it is a good idea to keep a current printout of the parameters in the cab glove box to be used as a quick reference or back-up. This applies to the new 1999 ECMs as well as the earlier ECMs.
