- Remove the valve mechanism cover. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Valve Mechanism Cover - Remove and Install".
- Remove the glow plugs. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Glow Plugs - Remove and Install".
- Remove the cover for the front housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Front Cover - Remove and Install".
Note: Tooling (A) can be inserted with the crankshaft pulley still on the engine.
- Rotate the crankshaft in the normal direction of the engine until Tooling (B) can be inserted through the camshaft gear and into the timing case.
Note: The camshaft gear can rotate a small amount when Tooling (B) is installed.
- Carefully rotate the crankshaft in the normal direction of the engine in order to align the hole in the crankshaft with the hole in the timing case and the cylinder block. Insert Tooling (A) fully into the hole in the crankshaft web.
Note: When Tooling (A) is inserted, number one piston will be at top center.
- Remove the Tooling (B) from the camshaft gear and Tooling (A) from the crankshaft web.
- Install the cover for the front housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Front Cover - Remove and Install".
- Install the glow plugs. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Glow Plugs - Remove and Install".
- Install the valve mechanism cover. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Valve Mechanism Cover - Remove and Install".
