C-9 Engine for Caterpillar Built Machines Caterpillar

System Configuration Parameters

Usage:

C-9 4ZF
System configuration parameters are parameters that affect emissions and power of the engine applications. Default values for the parameters are programmed at the factory. Some parameters may be changed by the customer in order to suit the needs of the specific application. System configuration parameters consist of ECM Identification Parameters and Selected Engine Rating Parameters. You must reprogram the ECM Identification Parameters if the ECM is replaced and/or you reprogram the engine rating. It is not necessary to reprogram the ECM Identification Parameters if a new personality module is installed. Proper values for these parameters are available on the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET). Certain configuration parameters are also stamped on the engine information plate.

Note: If the parameters that are protected with the factory passwords are changed, the Caterpillar warranty may be voided.

Parameter Descriptions

Injector Trim Codes

Note: The injector trim codes are not part of the "Configuration" screen on Cat ET. "Injector Codes Calibration" can be found under "Calibrations" in the "Service" menu on Cat ET.

The injector trim code is a number that is found on each of the unit injectors. The ECM uses this number to compensate for manufacturing variations between individual injectors. If you replace any of the unit injectors, you must reprogram the trim code for the new injectors. Also, if you replace the ECM, you must reprogram all of the trim codes.

Equipment ID

The "Equipment ID" parameter allows the customer to enter a description into the ECM in order to identify the machine. A maximum of 17 characters can be entered in the field.

Engine Serial Number

The "Engine Serial Number" should be programmed to match the engine serial number that is stamped on the engine information plate. The engine serial number is not preprogrammed on a replacement ECM.

Rating Number

The "Rating Number" is a reference number that corresponds to the rating map that resides in the personality module (flash file). Flash files may contain more than one rating.

FLS (Full Load Setting)

"FLS" is a number that represents the adjustment to the fuel system that was made at the factory in order to fine tune the fuel system. The correct value for this parameter is stamped on the engine information ratings plate. This value should only be changed if the engine is rerated or a new ECM is installed. Factory passwords are required.

FTS (Full Torque Setting)

"FTS" is similar to "FLS". This value should only be changed if the engine is rerated or a new ECM is installed. Factory passwords are required.

System Battery Voltage Low Elevated Idle

The "System Battery Voltage Low Elevated Idle" parameter allows the operation of this feature to be enabled or disabled. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Elevated Idle" for more information.

"Engine Oil Weight"

Do not program this parameter. Ensure that the proper oil grade plug (if equipped) is installed. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Oil and Filter - Change".

Note: Compare the FLS and the FTS from the ECM with the values that are listed on the Engine Information Plate. The FLS and the FTS should only be changed because of a mechanical change in the engine. The use of the wrong parameters could cause damage to the engine. The use of the wrong parameters may also void the Caterpillar warranty.
