- Raise the temperature of crankshaft gear (3). Install crankshaft gear (3) on the crankshaft with the keyway in alignment with the dowel. Timing Mark "V" is toward the outside of the crankshaft. The notch in the gear must be in alignment with the dowel in the crankshaft.
Note: Install the main bearings dry when clearance checks are made. Apply clean engine oil on the main bearing for final assembly.

- Install the lower half of the main bearings in main bearing caps (6) .
- Check the bearing clearances with Tooling (E) .
Note: Ensure that the numbers on main bearing caps (6) match the numbers on the cylinder block. The arrows on main bearing caps (6) are toward the front of the cylinder block.
Note: If the bolts for your main bearing cap are twelve point head bolts, the torque is 450 ± 14 N·m (332 ± 10 lb ft). If the bolts for your main bearing cap are hex head bolts, the torque is 258 ± 14 N·m (190 ± 10 lb ft).
- Install main bearing caps (6). Apply Tooling (G) to bolts (5). Install bolts (5) in main bearing caps (6). Tighten the bolt on the tab end of main bearing caps (6). Next, tighten the other main bearing cap bolt.
- Put a mark on each bolt and each main bearing cap. Tighten the bolt on the opposite side of the tab end of the main bearing cap for an additional 120 ± 5 degrees. Next, tighten the bolt on the tab end of the main bearing cap for an additional 120 ± 5 degrees.

- Install the lower half of the connecting rod bearings in connecting rod caps (1). Thoroughly lubricate the threads on bolts (2). Install connecting rod caps (1) on the connecting rods. The number on the side of connecting rod caps (1) is on the same side as the number on the connecting rods.
- Refer to Illustration 9 for the tightening sequence. Tighten bolts (2A) and (2C) to a torque of 70 ± 4 N·m (52 ± 3 lb ft). Tighten bolts (2B) and (2D) to a torque of 70 ± 4 N·m (52 ± 3 lb ft). Tighten bolts (2B) and (2D) for an additional 60 ± 5 degrees. Tighten bolts (2A) and (2C) to a torque of 70 ± 4 N·m (52 ± 3 lb ft). Tighten bolts (2A) and (2C) for an additional 60 ± 5 degrees.
- Check the end play of the crankshaft with Tooling (F). Ensure that Tooling (F) is against a machined surface. The end play is controlled by the thrust plates of center main bearing. The end play with new thrust plates must be 0.13 to 0.50 mm (0.005 to 0.020 inch). The maximum permissible end play with used thrust plates is 0.89 mm (0.035 inch).
End By:
- Install the crankshaft rear seal. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankshaft Rear Seal - Install".
- Install the crankshaft front seal. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankshaft Front Seal - Install".
- Install the flywheel housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Flywheel Housing - Remove and Install".
- Install the front housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Housing (Front) - Install".
