NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

  1. Install pin (9) in the crankshaft. The length of the pin out of the crankshaft face is 8.4 mm (0.33 inch).

  1. Install the dowel in the crankshaft. The length of the dowel out of the crankshaft surface is 4.1 ± 0.5 mm (0.16 ± 0.02 inch).

    Illustration 2g00568027

  1. Raise the temperature of crankshaft gear (3). Install crankshaft gear (3) on the crankshaft with the keyway in alignment with the dowel. Timing Mark "V" is toward the outside of the crankshaft. The notch in the gear must be in alignment with the dowel in the crankshaft.

Note: Install the main bearings dry when clearance checks are made. Apply clean engine oil on the main bearing for final assembly.

    Illustration 3g01096989

  1. Ensure that the upper half of main bearing (11) is in the cylinder block. Ensure that the main bearings are installed so that bearing tabs fit into the notch in the cylinder block and in the main bearing caps. Ensure that the upper half of connecting rod bearing (10) is in the connecting rod.

  1. Ensure that Timing Marks "V" are aligned on idler gear (4) and crankshaft gear (3) .

    Illustration 6g00567844

Note: Install the thrust plates with the identification "Block Side" toward the cylinder block.

  1. Apply clean engine oil to thrust plates (7). Install thrust plates (7) next to the center main bearings.

    Illustration 7g01096945

  1. Install the lower half of the main bearings in main bearing caps (6) .

  1. Check the bearing clearances with Tooling (E) .

Note: Ensure that the numbers on main bearing caps (6) match the numbers on the cylinder block. The arrows on main bearing caps (6) are toward the front of the cylinder block.

Note: If the bolts for your main bearing cap are twelve point head bolts, the torque is 450 ± 14 N·m (332 ± 10 lb ft). If the bolts for your main bearing cap are hex head bolts, the torque is 258 ± 14 N·m (190 ± 10 lb ft).

  1. Install main bearing caps (6). Apply Tooling (G) to bolts (5). Install bolts (5) in main bearing caps (6). Tighten the bolt on the tab end of main bearing caps (6). Next, tighten the other main bearing cap bolt.

  1. Put a mark on each bolt and each main bearing cap. Tighten the bolt on the opposite side of the tab end of the main bearing cap for an additional 120 ± 5 degrees. Next, tighten the bolt on the tab end of the main bearing cap for an additional 120 ± 5 degrees.

  1. Install the lower half of the connecting rod bearings in connecting rod caps (1). Thoroughly lubricate the threads on bolts (2). Install connecting rod caps (1) on the connecting rods. The number on the side of connecting rod caps (1) is on the same side as the number on the connecting rods.

  1. Refer to Illustration 9 for the tightening sequence. Tighten bolts (2A) and (2C) to a torque of 70 ± 4 N·m (52 ± 3 lb ft). Tighten bolts (2B) and (2D) to a torque of 70 ± 4 N·m (52 ± 3 lb ft). Tighten bolts (2B) and (2D) for an additional 60 ± 5 degrees. Tighten bolts (2A) and (2C) to a torque of 70 ± 4 N·m (52 ± 3 lb ft). Tighten bolts (2A) and (2C) for an additional 60 ± 5 degrees.

  1. Check the end play of the crankshaft with Tooling (F). Ensure that Tooling (F) is against a machined surface. The end play is controlled by the thrust plates of center main bearing. The end play with new thrust plates must be 0.13 to 0.50 mm (0.005 to 0.020 inch). The maximum permissible end play with used thrust plates is 0.89 mm (0.035 inch).

End By:

  1. Install the crankshaft rear seal. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankshaft Rear Seal - Install".
  2. Install the crankshaft front seal. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankshaft Front Seal - Install".
  3. Install the flywheel housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Flywheel Housing - Remove and Install".
  4. Install the front housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Housing (Front) - Install".
