Start By:

  1. Remove the Transmission Oil Cooler. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Transmission Oil Cooler - Remove and Install". The information is in this manual.


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Drain the coolant from the cooling system into a suitable container. The coolant system contains 38 L (9.9 US gal) of coolant.

  1. Fasten a hoist, nylon lifting straps, and Tool (A) to engine compartment access door (1) , as shown. Open engine compartment access door (1) , as shown.

  1. Remove cotter pin (3) and the washer from control rod (4) .

  1. Remove four bolts (2) and the washers from the hinges. Remove engine compartment access door (1) from the hood assembly. The weight of the engine compartment access door is 34 kg (75 lb) .

  1. Remove two bolts (5) and the washers from the mounting bracket.

  1. Remove two bolts (6) and the washers from the mounting bracket. One of the bolts is hidden.

  1. Remove bolt (7) and the washer from the mounting bracket.

  1. Remove four bolts (8) and the washers from the hood assembly. Remove cover plate (9) from the hood assembly.

  1. Remove two bolts (10) and the washers from the mounting bracket.

  1. Remove wire harness (11) from the clip and disconnect the wire harness.

  1. Fasten a hoist, nylon lifting straps, and Tooling (B) to hood assembly (12) , as shown. Carefully remove hood assembly (12) from the machine. The weight of the hood assembly is 64 kg (140 lb) .

  1. Remove two bolts (13) and the washers from the fan guard (15) . Remove ten bolts (14) and the washers from fan guard (15) . Remove fan guard (15) from the radiator assembly.

  1. Remove one bolt (16) , the washer, and two hose clips (17) from the radiator assembly.

  1. Remove two bolts (18) , the washers, and hose clip (19) from the radiator assembly. Remove bracket (20) from the radiator assembly.

  1. Loosen hose clamp (21) and disconnect hose (22) from the radiator assembly.

  1. Loosen hose clamp (23) and disconnect hose (24) from the radiator assembly.

  1. Loosen hose clamp (25) and disconnect hose (26) from the radiator assembly.

  1. Loosen hose clamp (27) and disconnect hose (28) from the radiator assembly.

    The radiator has been removed for photographic purposes.

  1. Remove six bolts (29) from fan (30) .

  1. Carefully put fan (30) into the radiator assembly.

  1. Remove six bolts (31) and the washers from bottom plate (32) . Use a suitable lifting device, and carefully remove bottom plate (32) from the frame. The weight of the bottom plate is 109 kg (240 lb) .

  1. Remove four bolts (33) and the washers from the radiator mounting brackets.

  1. Remove four bolts (34) , two hose clips (35) and the washers from plate (36) . Remove plate (36) from the radiator assembly.

  1. Fasten a hoist, nylon lifting straps, and Tooling (C) to the radiator assembly, as shown. Carefully remove the radiator assembly from the frame. The weight of the radiator assembly is 134 kg (295 lb).
