Introduction
When updating Product Link with the new 242-7204 Product Link Software (or later), the Product Link Modem must be updated with the 242-7203.XML Software. The new 242-7204 Product Link Software replaces 224-6310 Communication Software Gp on all PL151 and PL201 Product Link Modules that are in the field. The 242-7203.XML software file is available (in the form of a flash file) through Caterpillar Service Information System (SIS). The Product Link MODEM Software must be updated after the Product Link Software update has been completed. The following procedure will guide you through the process.
Procedure
Note: The Caterpillar 171-4401 Communication Adapter As should be used for this procedure. Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) version 2003B or later must be used when completing this procedure.
Prior to using WinFlash to update the Product Link software with the latest flash file (software part number 242-7204 or later), use screen captures or a notepad to make a note of all Product Link configuration parameters.
Note: If an error occurs at any time during this procedure, re-start ET and begin the procedure at Step 1.
- Download software files from SIS.
- The 242-7204 Product Link Software is a standard flash file that can be downloaded from SIS (using the standard method).
- The 242-7203 Product Link Software is Not a standard flash file. Use the following procedure to download 242-7203 Product Link Software.
- From the SIS Main Menu, select "Flash Software Files".
- Enter "242-7203" in the "Flash Filename" box. Click on the "Search" button.
- "242-7203.xml" will be displayed under "Flash Files Available for Download."
- Right click on the "242-7203.xml" link. Select "Save Target As" from the resulting sub-menu.
- This will cause a "Save As" dialog box to be displayed. Use the "Save As" dialog box to save the file to your computer.
Note: If you Left Click on the "242-7203.xml" link, it will not download properly. Instead you will get the display shown in Illustration 1.
If you get the display shown in Illustration 1, click the "Back" button on the browser. Restart this procedure from Step 3.d.
- Disconnect the RF antenna (Male TNC connector) from the Product Link Module (PLM). Do NOT re-connect the RF antenna until you are instructed to do so.

- Turn the machine keyswitch to the ON position. Connect to the PLM with Cat ET.
- Use WinFlash to flash software part number 242-7204 (or later version) into the Product Link Module.
- Select "Data Transport" from the Cat ET menu. Refer to Illustration 2.
- Click on "Information".
- Click on "Data Transport".
Illustration 2 | g01020437 |
- Cat ET will pause a few seconds while extracting information from the ECM. After Cat ET successfully extracts this information from the ECM, a dialog box will appear. This dialog box will contain the text "The data has been successfully loaded from the ECM". When this dialog appears, click on the "OK" button.
- Near the bottom of the Cat ET screen, click on the button labeled "Load from File". Refer to Illustration 3.
Illustration 3 | g01020459 |
- Cat ET will now prompt you with a standard Windows "Open File " dialog box. Use this dialog box to navigate to the 242-7203.XML software file (or later version). Click on "Open".
Note: For special download instructions for the 242-7203.XML software file, see Steps 3.a through 3.e.
- Once the 242-7203.XML software file has been loaded into ET, a dialog box will be displayed with the following text: "Data Successfully loaded from the offboard file". Click "OK".
- To begin programming the MODEM, click on the button near the bottom of the Cat ET screen (labeled "Program ECM"). Refer to Illustration 4.
Illustration 4 | g01020491 |
- Cat ET will begin transferring the file to the Product Link module. A dialog box containing a Status Bar will appear in order to show programming progress. When the Status Bar first appears, it may take several seconds to begin to show progress. The duration of the entire programming time will be approximately 5 minutes.
- When programming is complete, a dialog box will appear informing you that the file download was successful. Click "OK".
Note: If an error occurs during Step 14, modify your ET settings as follows:
- Select Utilities/Preferences from the ET menu. See Illustration 5.

- Select the "Advanced" button in the Preferences window. See Illustration 6.
Show/hide tableIllustration 6 g01026607
- Select the next lower baud rate than the baud rate that is currently selected.
For example, if the 57600 baud rate is currently selected, select 38400. If the 38400 baud rate is currently selected, select the 19200 baud rate. See Illustration 7.

- Click the "OK" button on the "Advanced Communication Settings" window.
- Click the "OK" button on the "Preferences" window. See Illustration 6.
- Disconnect ET.
- Cycle power by turning the keyswitch to the OFF position and then (after a few seconds) turning the keyswitch back to the ON position.
- Connect ET and select "Product Link".
- Restart this procedure from Step 4.
- Implementation of this new software may cause some of the configuration parameters to be displayed incorrectly. Following the successful modem software update, send a deregistration command using Cat ET. Deregistration will cause all parameters to be reset to their factory defaults. Refer to Illustration 8.

- Once the deregistration message is queued successfully, reset the Product Link configuration parameters to their original values (use screen captures taken at the beginning of this procedure). To validate module status and configuration parameters, refer to Systems Operation, Troubleshooting, Testing and Adjusting, RENR5885, "Product Link 151/201".
- Using Cat ET, send a registration command to Product Link. Refer to Illustration 9.
