Introduction
Maximum service life of the 249-2439 Seal can only be obtained with proper handling and with proper installation. Careful handling and installation of the seal is essential to the function of the seal.
The seal is an assembly that consists of three pieces:
- A stationary portion that is installed into the pump housing
- A rotating portion that is installed onto the pump shaft
- A spring with a retainer that is installed onto the rotating portion
The stationary portion and the rotating portion are composed of silicon carbide. The outer diameter of the stationary portion has a rubber ring that holds the portion in the pump housing. The inner diameter of the rotating portion has a rubber ring that holds the rotating portion on the pump shaft. After the spring assembly is installed onto the rotating portion, the impeller is installed onto the pump shaft and the impeller holds the seal in place.
Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until you have read this information and you understand this information.
Installation
- After the pump shaft is installed, tape the edges of the pump shaft in order to protect the seal during installation.
Note: Be careful not to damage the portions of the seal. Do not touch the faces of the seal. Even fingerprints can cause the seal to leak. The faces of the seal must be clean in order to prevent leakage. For handling of the seal and for installation of the seal, use a clean towel to protect the surfaces of the seal.
- If stationary portion (1) is separated from the rubber ring, position the stationary portion into the ring.

Installation tool |
Note: The installation tool is not provided with the seal.
- Lubricate the outside diameter of stationary portion (1) with clean water only. Orient the polished face of the stationary portion toward the impeller end of the pump shaft. Use hand pressure to evenly seat the stationary portion into the pump housing.
Make sure that the stationary portion is fully seated.
- Remove spring assembly (3) from rotating portion (2). Lubricate the inner diameter of the rotating portion with clean water only. Use hand pressure in order to evenly install the rotating portion onto the shaft. Push the seal onto the shaft until the face of the rotating portion makes light contact with the face of the stationary portion.
- To ensure that the rotating portion is properly seated, rotate the shaft.
If the seal has a visible wobble, use hand pressure and press the seal until the seal is fully seated. Rotate the shaft again in order to make sure that the seal is seated.
- Install the spring assembly onto the rotating portion.
- Remove the tape from the pump shaft.
NOTICE |
---|
Operation of the pump with a dry seal will reduce the service life of the seal. Do not operate the pump with a dry seal. |
After installing the pump, ensure that coolant has been added to the cooling circuit and make sure that the pump is primed. Purge any air from the cooling circuit according to the engine's Operation and Maintenance Manual.
