Usage:
Introduction
This special instruction contains the procedure needed to modify the track roller frame guiding guards for heavy duty and sealed and lubricated track.
The new track link uses a 32 mm (1.26 in) longer pin that requires a wider spacing of the track guiding guards. Modification of the track roller frame guiding guards is necessary to adapt earlier D6H tractors to the new track.
Do not perform any procedure, outlined in this publication, or order any parts until you read and understand the information contained within.
NOTE: Attach a "DO NOT OPERATE" or similar warning tag to the start switch or controls before starting the procedure to modify the D6H Track Roller Frame. These tags, SEHS7332, are available from your Caterpillar dealer.
Reference: Service Manual, Custom Track Service Handbook, and Parts Manual.
Adaptability
The track roller frame guiding guards modification, center guards, and full length guards procedures are adaptable to all D6H Tractors listed above.
Installation Procedure
NOTE: The installation procedures for the track roller frame guiding guards are covered in the following steps. Do not discard any parts that are removed, until all assembly procedures are complete. Some of the removed parts will be reused later in this instruction.
Sudden movement of the machine can cause injury to persons on or near the machine. To prevent possible injury, do the procedure that follows before working on the machine. |
- * Permit only one operator on the machine. Keep all other personnel away from machine or in view of the operator.
- * Move the machine to a smooth horizontal location. Move away from working machines and personnel and lower the blade to the ground.
- * Put blocks in front of and behind the tracks.
- * Engage the parking brake.
- * Stop the engine.
- * Move the machine to a smooth horizontal location. Move away from working machines and personnel and lower the blade to the ground.
Removal of Front and Rear Guiding Guards
Do not torch or weld on painted areas. The effect of gasses from burned paint is a danger to the person doing the cutting or welding. |
1. Remove the left side track roller frame from the machine.
NOTE: Refer to the topic entitled "Remove Track Roller Frames", in your machine's appropriate service manual.
2. Remove the front and rear idlers from the track roller frame.
NOTE: Refer to the topic entitled "Remove And Install Idlers", in your machine's appropriate service manual.

3. Remove the full length guiding guard (1), if equipped, from the track roller frame (2). See Illustration 1 for the correct location.
4. Take an accurate inside measurement from wear strip to wear strip on the front track guiding guards (3) and (4), and the rear track guiding guards (5) and (6). See Illustration 1, and dimension (H) in Illustration 2 for the correct location to take measurement. The correct measurement for dimension (H) on machines equipped with heavy duty track is 311.0 mm (12.24 in) as shown in Chart A.
It is possible that there may be enough clearance, since some spreading may have already occurred with prior machine usage. In this instance, no modification is required. In the event that dimension (H) does not equal 308.0 mm (12.12 in), proceed to step 5.
5. Using a cutting torch, remove the front guiding guards (3) and (4), from track roller frame (2) at the factory welds.
NOTE: Be careful when cutting old front guards from the track roller frame not to remove any more material than necessary.
6. Using a cutting torch, remove rear guiding guards (5) and (6) from track roller frame (2) at the factory welds.
NOTE: Use extreme care when cutting away old guards not to disturb the original shape of the track roller frame guard mounting surface.
7. Grind all surfaces on the track roller frame smooth to insure proper fit of new guards.
8. Repeat Steps 1 through 7 for the right track roller frame.
Installation of Front Guiding Guards
Do not torch or weld on painted areas. The effect of gasses from burned paint is a danger to the person doing the cutting or welding. |
NOTE: For welding in this procedure, use a dry, low hydrogen E7018 weld rod or E70T-5 (do not use E70T-1) cored wire with CO2 gas shielding.
1. Install front guards (3) and (4) to the left track roller frame (2), using the dimensions listed in Chart A.
2. Weld front guards (3) and (4) to the track roller frame (2) as shown. See Illustration 2. Care must be taken to maintain dimension (H). It is important that the guiding guards be spaced equally from side to side. Dimension (C) is the distance between the two bolt holes, and dimension (D) is the distance form the center of the dowel to the center of the top bolt hole shown in Illustration 2.
NOTE: For proper weld penetration, remove weld slag after each pass.
3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for the right side.
Installation of Rear Guiding Guards
Do not torch or weld on painted areas. The effect of gasses from burned paint is a danger to the person doing the cutting or welding. |
NOTE: For welding in this procedure use a dry, low hydrogen E7018 weld rod or E70T-5 (do not use E70T-1) cored wire with CO2 gas shielding.
Illustration 3.
Rear Frame Assembly
1. Install rear guards (5) and (6) to the left track roller frame (2), using the dimensions listed in Chart (B) and Illustration 3.
2. Weld rear guards (5) and (6) to the track roller frame, as shown. See Illustration 3.
NOTE: For proper weld penetration, remove weld slag after each pass.
3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for the right side.
Modification And Installation Of Full Length Track Guiding Guards (If Equipped)

Typical example for area of stock removal for Standard, LGP, and Extended Undercarriage full length track guiding guard
1. With the full length track guiding guard (1) removed, mill the shaded area of the guard to dimension (O) shown in Illustration 5 and Chart C. Mill the full length of the guiding guard.
Illustration 6
Location of weld on full length track guiding guard
Do not torch or weld on painted areas. The effect of gasses from burned paint is a danger to the person doing the cutting or welding. |
2. In the area of stock removal (P), add a 2.5 mm (.098 in) butt weld. This weld should run the entire length of the guiding guard (1) where the stock has been removed, and the vertical rail meet. See Illustration 6 for the correct location of the weld.

3. Replace the 8G9824 Plate on the front of the full length track guiding guard (1). Replace the 8G9824 Plate with a 8E9932 Plate (7). See Illustrations 7 and 8 above.
4. Install the full length track roller guard (1) to the left track roller frame (2) using bolts (8) and spacers (9) removed earlier, as shown.
5. Tighten bolts (8) to a torque of 430 ± 60 N·m (320 ± 40 lb ft).
6. Secure 8E9932 Plate (7) to the front track guiding guards (3) and (4) using bolts (10) and washers (11) removed earlier. Tighten these bolts to a torque of 120 ± 20 N·m (90 ± 15 lb ft).
7. Install tubes (12), rods (13), washers (14), and nuts (15) removed earlier. Tighten nuts to a torque of 100 ± 15 N·m (75 ± 11 lb ft).

The tie bars can be installed by drilling extra holes in the guiding guard and securing with 3W4144 Rods, 7G4355 Tubes, 8T4122 Washers, and 6V8181 Full Nuts. The locations of the extra holes are shown in Illustrations 9 through 11 above, along with the dimensions given in Chart D. Tighten nuts to a torque of 100 ± 15 N·m (75 ± 11 lb ft).
9. Repeat Steps 1 through 8 for the right side.

1. If equipped, the center track guiding guard (17) must also be replaced. Replace the 3T5383 Center Guard Assembly with a 9U8468 Center Guard Assembly.
2. Remove the old center track guard.
3. Using Chart E above, install the new center track guiding guard to track roller frame, using bolts (18) and spacers (19) removed earlier, as shown. See Illustration 12 above.
4. Tighten bolts (18) to a torque of 430 ± 60 N·m (320 ± 40 lb ft).
5. Repeat Steps 1 through 4 for the right side.
