Problem

The seat back recliner bracket may break on certain D9N, D10N D11N, and 772B Tractors; 769C and 773B Trucks; and 95OF and 966F Wheel Loaders. This may allow the seat back to move back and forth causing operator discomfort.

Rework Procedure

Procedure For Machines With Less Than 50 SMU or in Dealer Stock:

1. To remove the seat cushion, lift the lever that releases the seat cushion tilt and raise the seat cushion to it's highest position. Slip a pry bar between the seat cushion and the metal tilt pan at the front outer corners and lift up until the cushion is free of the plastic fasteners.

2. While holding down the tilt pan; pull the hair pin clips. Lift the seat tilt lever again until the tilt pan is clear of the notches in the locking bars. Relieve the spring tension on the tilt pan by allowing the pan to rotate up and back until the tabs at the rear of the tilt pan can be disengaged.

3. Remove the loose tilt pan, springs, and hair pin clips and save. Cut off the plastic cushion retainers and replace them with new retainers in the kit. See Illustration.

4. Lift the back cushion tilt lever and allow the back to tilt to it's maximum forward postion.

5. Protect the recliner mechanism, seat back cushion, push/pull cable and surrounding area from debris and weld spatter during repair.

6. Remove the paint from the area to be welded on the mounting bracket and raised portion of the seat pan.

Ground the welder to the seat pan only. Grounding the welder to any other location can cause damage to other seat components due to the grounding path. Also, take care to not burn through the thin metal seat pan. Do not braze... the additional heat will damage other seat components.

7. Form a continuous weld around the existing mounting bracket to the top side of the seat pan as shown in Detail A. Use ainch 7014 weld rod and set the amperage between 80 and 90 amps (AC welding machine) or 105 to 110 amps (DC welding machine with straight polarity). Chip or grind welds to be sure the seat cushion tilt pan will go down to the lowest position when installed in the tilt pan. If the tilt pan will not go down completely, remove and flush grind any weld build-up on the front tab. Paint the repaired area and the new recliner mounting bracket.

8. Assemble the parts of the seat in the reverse order from that used to disassemble it.

Procedure For Machines With More Than 50 SMU:

1. To remove the seat cushion, lift the lever that releases the seat cushion tilt and raise the seat cushion to it's highest position. Slip a pry bar between the seat cushion and the metal tilt pan at the front outer corners and lift up until the cushion is free of the plastic fasteners.

2. While holding down the tilt pan, pull the hair pin clips.

5. Remove one "E" ring from the front recliner pin located through the elongated holes in the seat pan. Pull the pin from the recliner mechanism. The back is also spring loaded. The recliner push/pull cable will limit the amount of rearward movement of the recliner mechanism.

Avoid grinding into the original metal of the seat pan, which is thin sheet metal. It is recommended to use a narrow grinding wheel to remove the welds.

6. Grind off the welds on the front and back of the recliner mounting bracket which extends through rectangular slots in the middle of the seat pan. After the mounting bracket is removed, remove the paint on the top and front of the raised portion of the seat pan.

7. Position new recliner mount into the clearance slots or into the rectangular hole until the tabs without holes lay directly against the seat pan. Tap lightly with a hammer to be sure the bracket is against the sloping surface of the raised portion of the seat pan. This will allow the tilt pan to go back into the seat pan and let the cushion tilt pan move to the lowest position.

8. Install an "E" ring (from kit) on one end of the longer pin (from kit). Insert the pin through the new mounting bracket and the recliner mechanism. Push the pin all the way through and install an "E" ring on the other end of the pin. This will locate the recliner mechanism prior to welding.

9. Protect the recliner mechanism, seat back cushion, push/pull cable and surrounding area from debris and weld spatter during repair.

Ground the welder to the seat pan only. Grounding the welder to any other location can cause damage to other seat components due to the grounding path. Also, take care to not burn through the thin metal seat pan. Do not braze ... the additional heat will damage other seat components.

10. Weld the new mounting bracket to the top side of the seat pan as shown in Detail A. Use ainch 7014 weld rod and set the amperage between 80 and 90 amps (AC welding machine) or 105 to 110 amps (DC welding machine with straight polarity). Weld as continuous and complete a weld as possible. Chip or grind welds to be sure the seat cushion tilt pan will go down to the lowest position when installed in the tilt pan. If the tilt pan will not go down completely, remove and flush grind any weld build-up on the front tab. Paint the repaired area and the new recliner mounting bracket.

11. Assemble the parts of the seat in the reverse order from that used to disassemble it.
