Engine News SEBD9270, March 1999, "New Water Pumps With Improved Resistance To shock Loads Used". Disregard this article. The chart in this article is not correct. This article has been replaced by the following article.

Description of Change: New water pump groups are used on these engines. The new water pump groups include a new ring assembly (1) and a new seal group (2). See Illustration 1. These new components will provide the new water pump groups with increased resistance to damage from shock loads. These shock loads typically occur during shipping, handling, and installation of the water pump.

This illustration shows the location of the new 166-4374 Ring Assembly (1) and the new 166-4376 Water Pump Seal (2) in a typical new water pump group.

Adaptable To: The table identifies the new water pump groups and the corresponding former water pump groups for these engines. The new water pump groups are direct replacements for the former water pump groups.

Table 1
Corresponding New and Former Water Pump Group
New Water Pump Group Pt. No.     Former Water Pump Group Pt. No.
166-4377     122-0501
166-4378     122-0500
166-4379     122-0502
166-4380     122-0503
166-4381     122-0505
166-4382     137-8242 or 122-0504
The new 166-4376 Water Pump Seal is a direct replacement for the 124-5245 Face Seal Group in the former water pump groups. The new 166-4374 Ring Assembly is adaptable to the former water pump groups if a hole (X) is drilled through the water pump housing. Illustration 2 identifies the location and the dimensions for hole (X). This new hole (X) will accept the pin (A) from the new ring assembly (1). See Illustration 3. This will keep the opening in the new ring assembly positioned toward the bottom of the installed water pump. This will allow any fluid that leaks past the water pump seals to flow to the water pump weep port.

This illustration provides the dimensions for adding a new hole (X) to the typical water pump housing. The hole (X) is 2.50 ± 0.05 mm (0.098 ± 0.002 inch) in diameter. The hole (X) is located at a radius (R) of 17.50 ± 0.25 mm (0.689 ± 0.010 inch). Drill hole (X) through the water pump housing.
