The Caterpillar Monitoring System has several different possible modes of operation. Each mode provides important information regarding the condition of the engine. In this manual, all modes are given names. The modes are referred to by the given name. On the Display Area (2) of the main display module, each mode is shown as a number. This number is assigned by software in the main display module.
The operator accesses these modules with a "MODE" switch that is located on the instrument panel. The following table shows the available modes.
Mode Of Operation     | Mode Number     | Available As Operator Mode     |
Normal     | 0     | Yes     |
Harness Code     | 1     | Yes     |
Numeric Readout     | 2     | Yes     |
Service     | 3     | No     |
Tattletale     | 4     | Yes     |
Units     | 5     | Yes     |
When power is applied, the Caterpillar Monitoring System performs the System Self Test. Next, the Caterpillar Monitoring System enters Normal Mode. To enter the other modes, the "CLEAR/MODE" switch is held in the MODE position. This causes the mode numbers to scroll sequentially on the display area of the main display module. When the "CLEAR/MODE" switch is released, the Caterpillar Monitoring System enters the mode that is presently shown on the display. When mode "2" is shown on the readout, the release of the "CLEAR/MODE" switch causes the Caterpillar Monitoring System to enter Numeric Readout Mode.
Note: If the "CLEAR/MODE" switch is in the MODE position, the Caterpillar Monitoring System will perform the Self Test when power is applied. The remaining mode numbers will then scroll across the screen.
