Problem

The weld for the upper frame swing bearing mounting ring may crack in
certain applications, resulting in bolt breakage and/or bending of the
mounting ring. Longer necked-down bolts are available. They increase
the thread engagement in the upper frame and decrease the possibility of
bolt breakage or cracks in the weld for the upper frame swing bearing
mounting ring.

52 - 6C3189 Bolt

Action Required

Replace the 52-5F9338 Bolts (178 mm (7") long) with 52-6C3189 Bolts (206
mm (8.1") long). Before starting the rework, be sure a torque wrench is
available that can attain 1150 N.m (850 lb ft).
NOTE: A hydraulic torque wrench (1U5725) with a range of 130 to
1362 lb. ft. is available. This is a compact, light-weight
tool that can be used with an electric hydraulic pump to
loosen or tighten bolts. The use of a 1U7047 Relief Valve
Group with the hydraulic torque wrench makes the operation
easier.
NOTE: If a weld crack is visible, no weld repair is necessary.
Replace the bolts as follows:
1. Park the machine on level ground with a firm surface.
2. Replace six bolts at a time. Position the upper frame so the first
group of six bolts to be replaced is centered over the midpoint
between the tracks at the idler end.
3. Loosen the six bolts but ensure that they do not drop down onto the
carbody.
4. Swing the upper frame so the first bolt to be removed is directly
over the hole at the left rear of the carbody.
5. Remove the bolt and washer. The bolt should not be reused again.
The washers will be reused in this procedure.
6. Clean the threads in the upper frame using a 1" - 8 NC bottoming
tap. The tap must have extended length so it has a usable tap
distance of 205 mm (8"), not including the length of the entry
threads.
NOTE: A thin wall socket and extension can be used to drive the
tap if an extension is permanently added to the tap. Braze
the joint rather than welding it.
NOTE: If a drilled hole in the upper frame is not deep enough for
the 6C3189 Bolt, a 203 mm (8") long 1D4644 Bolt can be
installed. The customer should be advised to routinely
check the weld and the bolt.
7. Install a 6C3189 Bolt and the existing 5F8250 Washer. Hand tighten
the bolt.
8. Swing the upper frame so the next bolt is in position over the
hole.
9. Repeat Steps 5 thru 8 for the remaining loose bolts.
10. Swing the upper frame so it is in the same position as in Step 2.
11. Tighten the six bolts to 1150 N.m (850 lb ft).
12. Swing the upper frame to bring the next six bolts into position for
loosening.
13. Repeat Steps 3 thru 12 for all the remaining bolts.
