Introduction
The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.
Problem
Chassis Electronic Control Module (ECM) displays active codes on the machine dashboard due to malfunction on certain Off-Highway Trucks. The malfunctioned ECM may display one or more of the following diagnostic codes:
- Diagnostic code 248-9 - CAT Data Link abnormal update rate
- Diagnostic code 800-9 - VIMS Main Module abnormal update rate
- Diagnostic code 1089-9 - VIMS Analysis Module abnormal update rate
Solution
Do not operate or work on this product unless you have read and understood the instruction and warnings in the relevant Operation and Maintenance Manuals and relevant service literature. Failure to follow the instructions or heed the warnings could result in injury or death. Proper care is your responsibility. |
Caterpillar is aware of this problem, but a permanent repair has not been identified.
Lab analysis has not found any failure with the returned control modules. Dealers experiencing the issue with the control modules should perform the below recommendations:
- Follow published troubleshooting information.
- Report and document all displayed diagnostic codes.
- Download and attach Product Status Report (PSR) to work order.
- Document the machine performance problem that is experienced when the fault code is displayed.
- Do not replace the control module if no performance problem is experienced on the machine when the fault code is displayed.
- As needed replace the control module to eliminate machine performance problems.
- Do not stop the machine operations if no performance problem is experienced on the machine when the fault code is displayed.
