Important Safety Information
Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until you have read this Special Instruction and you understand this information. Use only proper tools and observe all precautions that pertain to the use of those tools. Failure to follow these procedures can result in personal injury. The following procedures should also be observed.
Work safely. Most accidents that involve product operation, maintenance, and repair are caused by failure to observe basic safety rules or precautions. An accident can often be avoided by recognizing potentially hazardous situations before an accident occurs.
A person must be alert to potential hazards. This person should also have the necessary training, skills, and tools in order to perform these functions properly.
Safety precautions and warnings are provided in this instruction and on the product. If these hazard warnings are not heeded, bodily injury or death could occur to you or to other persons. Caterpillar cannot anticipate every possible circumstance that might involve a potential hazard.
Therefore, the warnings in this publication and the warnings that are on the product are not all inclusive. Ensure that any tool, procedure, work method, or operating technique you use that is not recommended by Caterpillar is safe.
Ensure that the product will not be damaged or the product will not be made unsafe by the operation, lubrication, maintenance, or repair procedures used.
Failure to follow all safety guidelines prescribed in this document and by governing authorities and regulatory agencies may result in severe injury or death of personnel or machine damage. |
Sudden movement or accidental starting of the machine can cause personal injury or death to persons on or near the machine. To prevent personal injury or death, perform the following: Park the machine on a smooth, level surface. Lower the work tool to the ground and engage the parking brake. Stop the engine and remove the key. Block the wheels and install the steering frame lock. |
Climbing equipment may be required to access this service point. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Mounting and Dismounting" topic for safety information. |
Required Parts
Note: The use of a 1U-5804 Crimp Tool and wire strippers may be required for installation if using any optional accessory parts.

RS232 Signal Usage
Illustration 1 | g06254344 |
(1) (2) (3) |
- Plug the 542-5350 Control Harness As (1) connector "A" into an existing user supplied engine ECM harness.
- Plug connector "C" into 542-5351 Control Harness As (2) connector "H".
Note: The 542-5352 Control Harness As (3) can be used for greater distances. This requires mating connector "C" to connector "F" and connector "G" to connector "H".
- Connector "K" of the 542-5351 Control Harness As (2) will connect to user instrumentation. The end user may remove connector "K" and terminate the wires to data acquisition RS232 instrument per Table 3 or may order and connect accessory parts listed in Table 2.
RS485 "4 Wire" Signal Usage
Illustration 2 | g06254355 |
(1) |
- Install resistor cap "E" to connector "D" of the 542-5350 Control Harness As (1).
- Plug connector "A" of the 542-5350 Control Harness As (1) into the existing engine ECM harness. Plug connector "C" of the 542-5350 Control Harness As into connector "H" of the 542-5351 Control Harness As (2).
Note: If using the optional 542-5352 Control Harness As, connector "C" mates to connector "F" and connector "G" mates to connector "H".
- Connector "L" of the 542-5351 Control Harness As (2) will connect to user instrumentation.
The end user may remove connector "L" and terminate to a data acquisition instrument per Table 4 or may order and connect accessory parts listed in Table 2.
RS485 "2 Wire" Signal Usage
Note: If using the optional 542-5352 Control Harness As, connector "C" mates to connector "F" and connector "G" mates to connector "H".
Illustration 3 | g06254368 |
(1) |
- Remove resistor cap "E" from connector "D" of the 542-5350 Control Harness As if installed. Plug connector "D" of the 542-5350 Control Harness As into connector "B" of the 542-5350 Control Harness As.
- Plug connector "A" of the 542-5350 Control Harness As (1) into the existing engine ECM harness. Plug connector "C" of the 542-5350 Control Harness As into connector "H" of the 542-5351 Control Harness As (2).
- Connector "L" of the 542-5351 Control Harness As (2) will connect to user instrumentation.
The end user may remove connector "L" and terminate to a data acquisition RS485 instrument per Table 4 or may order and connect accessory parts listed in Table 2.
Note: It is recommended but not necessary to keep resistor caps "E", "I", and "J" in place. Removing one resistor will change cable impedance from 40 ohms to 60 ohms. Removing two resistors will result in 120 ohms.
