SUBJECT: EXHAUST BACKPRESSURE LIMITS FOR MARINE PROPULSION ENGINES
PROBLEM:
Caterpillar was at a competitive disadvantage because of the exhaust backpressure limits for "D" and "E" Tier ratings for the above marine propulsion engines.
SOLUTION:
Caterpillar is changing the exhaust backpressure limits for "D" and "E" Tier ratings for the above marine propulsion engines.
Formerly, the backpressure limit for the above turbocharged marine propulsion engines (except for 435 hp 3208, 3116, and 3126 Marine Propulsion Engines) was 6.75 kPa (27 inches of H2O). The backpressure limit for 435 hp 3208, 3116, and 3126 Marine Propulsion Engines was 9.96 kPa (40 inches of H2O).
The NEW backpressure limit for all of the above turbocharged marine "D" and "E" rated propulsion engines is 9.96 kPa (40 inches of H2O).
The backpressure limit for the above naturally aspirated marine propulsion engines has NOT changed. That backpressure limit is 8.47 kPa (34 inches of H2O).
Note: The backpressure should be measured between 6 and 12 inches downstream of the turbocharger and before any exhaust components.
