Sudden movement or accidental starting of the machine can cause personal injury or death to persons on or near the machine. To prevent personal injury or death, perform the following: Park the machine on a smooth, level surface. Lower the work tool to the ground and engage the parking brake. Stop the engine and remove the key. Block the wheels and install the steering frame lock. |
Personal injury or death can result from machine articulation or movement. Machine frames can move and a person can be crushed. Connect the steering frame lock link between the front and rear frames before working on machine. |
Personal injury or death can result if two persons are not used in the following procedure. |
NOTICE |
---|
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
The following procedure describes checking the service brake wear.
This procedure requires two people. One person must engage the service brakes and the other person must measure the disc wear. Care must be taken when you perform this procedure. Oil leakage from the brake system will occur. Keep all other personnel away from the machine or in sight of the operator.
- Park the machine on a level surface away from other equipment and other personnel and lower the implement to the ground. Place the transmission in NEUTRAL. Engage the parking brake and turn off the engine.
- Install the steering lock and chock the wheels.
- Start the engine in order to build brake system pressure.
- Stop the engine. Allow the axle oil to settle before proceeding to the next step.
Note: Keep the engine off when the brake wear is measured.
- Push the button on the top of each axle breaker relief valve in order to relieve any pressure.
Note: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Axle Breaker Relief Valve - Clean" for the axle breaker relief valve locations.

Service Brake Wear Indicator (1) Retaining ring. (2) Washer. (3) Piston. (4) Piston housing. (5) Dowel. (6) indicator pin. (B) Visible length of indicator pin. |
Each individual service brake uses an indicator pin (6) to determine if the service life of the friction discs has been exceeded. The indicator pin can be viewed through a port in the axle. There is a port with an inspection plug at each service brake.
- Apply the service brakes once in order to ensure proper positioning of the indicator pin (6). Hold the brake pedal in the applied position.
- Remove the inspection plug. Look through the port of the inspection plug on the axle housing. If the indicator pin (6) is visible, then the friction discs for the service brakes do not need replaced. If the indicator pin is not visible, then the friction discs for the service brakes do need replaced.
Note: The maximum visible length of the indicator pin (B) is approximately
3.25 ± 0.25 mm (.128 ± .01 inch) . - Replace the inspection plug.
- Repeat steps for each of the service brakes.
