Programming Parameters

Usage:

Certain parameters that affect the engine operation may be changed through Electronic Service Tools. The parameters are stored in the ECM, NOT the Personality Module. Any parameter can be read, but passwords protect parameters from unauthorized changes.

The parameters fall into two categories: System Configuration Parameters, and Customer Specified Parameters. System Configuration Parameters can be changed only with the proper factory passwords, and Customer Specified Parameters can be changed only with the proper customer passwords. Refer to the topic on passwords for more details on how to obtain and use passwords.

For details on how to read and change parameters using an ECAP, refer to Special Instruction SEHS9199, Using the NEXG4516 Marine/Industrial Engine Functions Service Program Module.

Programmable Parameters

Certain parameters that affect the engine operation may be changed with an Electronic Service Tool (ECAP). These parameters are stored in the ECM.

These parameters are either System Configuration Parameters or Customer Parameters. System Configuration Parameters are those that affect power ratings or emissions. Customer Parameters are those that affect Low Idle and High Idle Engine rpm Setting.

Self-Diagnostics

The ECM has a limited ability to diagnose itself. When a problem is detected, a diagnostic code is generated and the diagnostic lamp flashes the Active diagnostic code. In most cases, the diagnostic code is also stored (Logged) in permanent memory in the ECM.

Diagnostic codes that represent current diagnostic codes are called ACTIVE. They indicate that a problem of some kind currently exists. They should always be serviced first. Refer Troubleshooting Diagnostic Diagnostic codes in this manual for more details.

Diagnostic codes stored in memory are called LOGGED. Since the problem may have been temporary, or may have been repaired since the time it was logged, logged diagnostic codes do not necessarily mean something needs to be repaired. Instead they are meant to be an indicator of probable causes for intermittent problems. In addition, some logged diagnostic codes record EVENTS, rather than failures.

Diagnostic codes not requiring passwords to clear are automatically deleted after 100 ECM operating hours. Refer to Troubleshooting Diagnostic Codes in this manual for more details.

System Configuration Parameters

System Configuration Parameters are those that affect emissions or power of the engine. They are programmed at the factory and would normally never need to be changed through the life of the engine. Proper values for these parameters are stamped on the engine information ratings plate located on the valve cover or intake manifold. Factory Passwords are required to change these parameters. An example of the ECAP screen displaying System Configuration Parameters can be found at the end of this section. The following is a brief description of the System Configuration Parameters.

Full Load Setting

A number representing fuel system adjustment made at the factory to "fine tune" the fuel system. Correct value for this parameter is stamped on the engine information ratings plate.

Full Torque Setting

Similar to Full Load Setting. A number representing an adjustment made at the factory to "fine tune" the engine. Correct value for this parameter is stamped on the engine information ratings plate.

Personality Module Code

This code prevents use of incorrect Personality Module for this engine. Each power rating family and emission certification has a different code associated with it. The code (stored in ECM) MUST match that in the Personality Module or a 253-02 Diagnostic Code (56) will be generated. When rerating or installing a new ECM, programming this code to 0 (zero) will prompt the ECM to read and match its stored code to the Personality Module.

NOTE: This diagnostic code DOES NOT need to be programmed when a Personality Module is replaced if the new module is for the same rating. If the Personality Module is for a different rating, then pistons, nozzles, etc may need to be changed and the engine information plate should also be updated to reflect the rerate.

Engine Serial Number:

Should be programmed to match the engine serial number stamped on the ratings plate. A new ECM is delivered with the engine serial number programmed to 0XX00000.

Customer Specified Parameters

Customer Specified Parameters allow a customer to program some engine/system related parameters.

Customer parameters may be changed repeatedly. Customer Passwords are required to change these parameters. The following is a brief description of the Customer Specified Parameters. Along with each are the minimum and maximum values for the parameter and the default value. The parameter value displayed in bold is the setting which should be programmed if the feature is not used.

Low Idle Engine rpm:

Minimum engine rpm which may be programmed to any value between 600 rpm to 1300 rpm range.

Fuel-To-Air Ratio (FRC):

This parameter selects an FRC Limit map to control exhaust smoke during acceleration. It is similar to the rack stop on mechanical engines. The ECM may set certain limits on the amount of fuel injected. When the ECM senses a higher turbocharger compressor outlet (atmospheric) pressure (more air into the cylinders), the FRC fuel position limit is increased to allow more fuel into the cylinders.

Passwords

System Configuration Parameters are protected by Factory Passwords.

Customer Parameters are protected by Customer Passwords. The customer passwords are programmed by the customer.

Factory Passwords

Factory passwords are required to perform the following functions.

1. Read Customer Passwords. If the owner loses his customer passwords, he will not be able to program customer parameters. Using factory passwords, one can read customer passwords, then use those customer passwords to program customer parameters.

2. Clear certain diagnostic codes. Only Diagnostic Codes 190-00 (Engine Overspeed Alarm) and 23-02 (Excessive Engine Power) require factory passwords to clear once they are logged. Certain other diagnostic codes require customer passwords. The majority of logged diagnostic codes require no passwords to clear.

To obtain factory passwords, proceed as if you already had the password. At some point, if factory passwords are truly needed, the ECAP will request factory passwords and will provide on its screen most of the information required to obtain the passwords.

Customer Passwords

Customer passwords are required to change all customer parameters. Refer to the previous section on Customer Specified Parameters for more detail on what parameters are customer programmable.

To obtain customer passwords, contact the owner of the engine. If the owner has lost his passwords, customer passwords may be read using an ECAP (factory passwords are required in order to read the customer passwords) by following these steps:

1. Use the ECAP to access Read/Change System Configuration Parameters, then Read Customer Parameters.

2. When the Factory Passwords screen appears, record the information listed on the Factory Passwords Worksheet.

3. Obtain the factory passwords. The information recorded above must be provided, and generates a permanent record at Caterpillar of the access.

4. From the Factory Passwords screen, enter the Factory Passwords.

5. When the Read Customer Passwords screen appears, record the Customer Passwords. The Customer Passwords may then be used to change Customer Parameters.

Programming a New ECM

The Electronic Control Module (ECM) is the heart of the system. So when a problem occurs, it is easy to jump to the conclusion that the ECM is responsible. That is usually the wrong conclusion. There are no moving parts inside, therefore, the ECM very seldom fails.

Most failures occur at a sensor input/output, or in the wiring and connectors. Follow the troubleshooting guide procedures, and do not replace an ECM on speculation!

However, when your troubleshooting indicates that a failure has, in fact, occurred in the ECM, then temporarily mount a new ECM on the side of the engine and thoroughly Retest. If the problem is no longer present, then proceed with the following steps required to permanently replace a faulty ECM.

ECM Replacement Procedure

1. Record customer parameters from failed ECM.

NOTE: If ECAP is unable to communicate with the ECM, proceed to Step 2.

A. Obtain and record the Customer Passwords. If the customer (owner) has lost or forgotten his passwords, proceed to Customer Passwords.

B. Use the ECAP to access Read Customer Specified Parameters from the ECM being replaced.

C. Use the Customer Specified Parameters Worksheet, to record the customer parameters.

2. Replace the faulty ECM.

3. Obtain Factory Passwords.

A. Record engine hours from the engine hourmeter.

B. Use the ECAP to access Read/Change System Configuration Parameters. When the Factory Specified Passwords screen appears, record the following information: ECM serial number, Engine serial number, ECAP serial number, and Total Tattletales.

C. Leave the ECAP on the Factory Specified Passwords screen and obtain the Factory Passwords by providing the information listed on the Factory Passwords Worksheet.

4. Program the new ECM.

A. Use the ECAP to access Read/Change System Configuration Parameters. Enter the Factory Passwords into the Factory Specified Passwords screen. Enter the Full Load Setting, Full Torque Setting, and Engine serial number recorded on the worksheet. Program the Personality Module Diagnostic Code to 0 (zero) before leaving this screen.

B. Use the ECAP to access Read/Change Customer Specified Parameters. Enter Specified Parameters and the original Customer Passwords recorded on the worksheet.

C. Use the ECAP to access Calibrate/Monitor Sensors, and calibrate the boost sensor.

NOTE: If the Customer Specified Parameters are entered before the System Configuration Parameters, the Total Tattletales will change. It will then be necessary to obtain another set of Factory Passwords to access Read/Change System Configuration Parameters.
