Introduction
There is not any preventive maintenance adjustment of the RPTO. There is no special timing of the gears other than the crankshaft gear to the crankshaft and that is controlled by the offset bolt pattern.
NOTE: In a RPTO application, the timing hole for pinning the flywheel is located on the left hand side of flywheel housing. The following story is for this timing pin application.
Finding Top Center Position For No. 1 Piston
Locating Top Center
(1) Bolts. (2) Flywheel housing. (3) Cover.
1. Remove bolts (1) and cover (3) from flywheel housing (2).
Timing pin plug
(4) Plug.
2. Remove plug (4) from the timing pin hole, located on the left hand side of the flywheel housing.
Finding Top Center Position
(A) 9S9082 Engine Turning Tool.
3. Put one of the cover bolts (1) in the timing hole. Use 9S9082 Engine Turning Tool (A) and a 1/2 inch drive breaker bar or ratchet wrench to turn the engine flywheel in the direction of normal rotation (counterclockwise when viewed from the flywheel end) until the timing bolt can be installed in the flywheel threaded hole.
NOTE: If the flywheel is turned beyond the point that the timing bolt engages in the threaded hole, the flywheel must be turned opposite normal engine rotation 30 degrees. Then turn the flywheel in the direction of normal rotation (counterclockwise) until the timing bolt engages with the threaded hole. The reason for this procedure is to make sure the play is removed from the gears when the No. 1 piston is put on top center.
