Usage:
Step 1. Manual Linkage Check
Test Procedure:
With engine stopped, check the linkage manually for backlash or binding. See Service Procedure E.
Expected Results:
Linkage has no binding and backlash is acceptable.
Step 2. Isolation of Engine from Governor
Test Procedure:
Run engine and apply available load. Now manually hold linkage stationary.
NOTE: The easiest method to do this is to use the manual shutoff lever. Apply a small but steady amount of force in the shutoff direction. This procedure removes the governor system from the engine. Now it can be determined if problem is engine related or governor related.
Expected Results:
Constant engine speed.
Step 3. Adjust Gain and Stability Potentiometers
Test Procedure:
Run the engine under load or at no load. Adjust the 2301 Control GAIN and STABILITY potentiometers. See Service Procedure J for correct adjustment.
Expected Results:
Speed should become constant.
Step 4. Adjust Actuator Needle Valve
Test Procedure:
Stop the engine and let it cool down to ambient temperature. Now restart the engine. If the speed is unstable at start-up, turn the needle valve IN (CW) to slow actuator response (increase stability).
NOTE: Do not completely close needle valve setting with engine running. Typical setting is 3/4 to 2 turns open (CCW) from all the way closed position.
Expected Results:
Engine speed becomes constant.
Step 5. Check Supply Voltage to Control
Test Procedure:
Run the engine and measure the supply voltage to the 2301 Control. Manually shake (move rapidly) the supply leads to find any poor contact points.
Expected Results:
Voltage more than 20 VDC and constant.
Step 6. Remote Component Removal
Test Procedure:
Put identification on the leads that follow, and then remove these leads from the 2301 Control.
Now put a jumper across each set of the above terminals. Start and run the engine.
Expected Results:
Constant engine speed.
Step 7. Resistance Check of Actuator Leads
Test Procedure:
Stop the engine and remove the actuator leads at 2301 Control terminals T16 & T17 (T5 & T6, Standby unit). Measure resistance change from (+) to (-) as leads are manually shaken (moved rapidly).
Expected Results:
Resistance is 30 to 40 ohms and constant.
Step 8. Resistance Check of Common Grounds
Test Procedure:
Stop the engine. Measure the resistance between the common grounds of engine, 2301 Control and the switchgear.
Expected Results:
Resistance measures less than 2 ohms.
Step 9. Check Linear Speed Response
Test Procedure:
Run the engine without load. Adjust the RATED SPEED potentiometer to verify linear speed response.
Expected Results:
Speed response is uniform (a smooth increase).
Step 10. Check Generator Output Voltage
Test Procedure:
Run the engine at Full Load* and measure the output voltage of the generator. Manually hold linkage stationary as in Step 2.
Expected Results:
Constant voltage and constant engine speed.
*Voltage variation at No Load will not cause engine speed to have variation. If speed changes at No Load, continue on to Step 11.
Step 11. (For Load Share Unit Only) Check Engine Speed With Leads (As Shown) Disconnected
Test Procedure:
All current Transformer leads ends must be taped together as follows: CT4 to CT5; CT6 to CT7; CT8 to CT9! If load is applied to generator with leads not fastened together after they are disconnected from 2301 Control, extremely high voltages will be generated at lead ends. Personal injury or loss of life could be the result. |
Stop the engine. Put identification on all of the leads that follow:
Remove all of above leads from the 2301 Control. Completely cover the end of each lead that follows with tape: T10, T11, PT1, PT2, PT3. This will prevent any contact between leads or ground while they are disconnected from the control.
NOTICE |
---|
When engine is running (with or without load) Potential Transformer leads PT1, PT2 & PT3 can have a voltage output up to 240 volts across any two of these leads. |
Now start and run the engine.
Expected Results:
Speed should be constant.
Step 12. Check Actuator Oil Pressure Output
Test Procedure:
Remove the test pressure plug from actuator and install 6V2044 Test Pressure Gauge. Now crank the engine and read pressure gauge.
NOTE: For correct pressure range, see ACTUATOR SPECIFICATIONS in Service Procedure D.
Expected Results:
Oil pressure acceptable and constant.
Step 13. Check Actuator Oil Supply
Test Procedure:
Stop the engine. Verify that amount of oil supply is acceptable. Engine oil sump compartment must be full, oil suction line must be open and must not have any air leaks (i.e., loose fittings or faulty gaskets). Drain must be open to allow good drainage with no back pressure. See Service Procedure D.
Expected Results:
Good oil supply, no drainage problems.
